摘要: A liquid crystal display device having a high definition screen in which a pixel electrode is formed in a region surrounded by a gate line and a drain line, and a trapezoidal protrusion having an upper surface and inclined surfaces is formed below the gate line. Since a TFT is formed over a trapezoidal protrusion and a channel portion is formed over the upper surface and the inclined surfaces of the trapezoidal protrusion, the width of the channel portion can be enlarged compared to that of a channel portion formed over a plane. The pixel electrode is in contact with a source electrode at the inclined surface of the trapezoidal protrusion. This configuration allows the TFT and a contact of the pixel electrode and a source electrode to be formed over part of the trapezoidal protrusion.

摘要: A processing portion for conversion from RGB to RGBW includes a W generating circuit, a sub-pixel rendering circuit, a W intensity calculating portion which transmits a W intensity setting value to a W generating circuit, and a low power backlight control circuit which expands data on the basis of the RGBW pixels generated by the sub-pixel rendering portion and lowers the backlight in accordance with the amount by which the data is expanded. The inputted RGB data is used as the RGBW data with the W intensity calculated by the W intensity calculating portion. A backlight control signal is generated based on the amount of data expansion in the sub-pixel rendering portion. Deterioration (darkness) of image quality due to a reduction in the brightness of a single color as a result of the conversion from RGB pixels to RGBW pixels is prevented and a reduction in the power is achieved.

摘要: An optical element is arranged in such a manner that a screen thereof can be hardly observed from a predetermined direction, and a deterioration of an image quality caused by moire does not occur. The optical element is constituted by a first polarizing layer, a second polarizing layer, and a liquid crystal layer arranged between these two polarizing layers. In the optical element, absorption axes of the first polarizing layer and the second polarizing layer are located parallel to each other; the liquid crystal layer is made of hybrid-aligned discotic liquid crystal; and an alignment axis of the liquid crystal layer is located parallel to, or perpendicular to both absorption axes of the first polarizing layer and of the second polarizing layer.

摘要: A display unit which displays a plurality of objects viewed as being located at different depthwise positions by the viewer so as to exhibit an image with depthwise feeling, includes: a single display portion including a far-distant display zone and a near-distant display zone, a polarized beam splitting element in front of the near-distant display zone, a polarized beam changing element in front of the far-distant display zone, and a total reflection mirror for reflecting an image beam emitted from the far-distant display zone, onto the polarized beam splitting element. An image beam emitted from the far-distant display zone is transmitted through the polarized beam changing element, then is reflected at the total reflection mirror, and thereafter is reflected by the polarized beam splitting element before it is viewed by the viewer.
