    摘要: Disclosed is a conventional organic light emitting diode (OLED) having one reflective electrode in combination with at least one transparent OLED in stacked configuration functioning as backlighting in a transflective display apparatus such as a liquid crystal display (LCD). Preferably, at least two transparent OLEDs are arranged in a stacked configuration with one conventional OLED, each of the three OLEDs emitting light of a different bandwidth. The reflective electrode located behind the backlight also serves as a reflecting plate for the display. This arrangement enhances reflectivity and permits color sequencing in the transmissive mode, allowing all the components of a full color display (i.e. red, green, blue) to emit through the same pixel without the need for a color filter.

    摘要: The present invention relates to structures and components for protecting organic light emitting diodes from environmental elements such as moisture and oxygen. According to a first aspect of the invention, top-emitting, high-resolution, OLED structures are provided which include a metal foil substrate; a planarization layer disposed over the metal foil substrate; an OLED stack (which includes lower and upper electrodes as well as an organic region disposed between the electrodes) disposed over the planarization layer; and a multilayer barrier region disposed over the OLED stack. A second aspect of the invention is directed to flexible, top emitting OLED structures which include the following: thin substrate region (i.e., a substrate having a thickness that is less than 200 microns); an OLED stack disposed over the flexible substrate region; a transparent upper barrier region that cooperates with the flexible substrate region to encapsulate the OLED stack, thereby protecting it from outside species such as water or oxygen; and a polymeric reinforcement layer which has a Young's Modulus ranging from about 0.3 to 7 GPa, which is disposed (i) below the substrate region, (ii) above the upper barrier region (in which case it is transparent), or (iii) both below the substrate region and above the upper barrier region.

    摘要: A light sensing apparatus adaptable for inclusion in an array of such apparatus is operable independent of polling cycle providing a more accurate sensing of the patterns of illumination incident on an array of such apparatus. The apparatus facilitates utlizing each address line to simultaneously initialize one row of apparatus while enabling the subsequent row of apparatus. The apparatus is also compatible with elements capable of providing gain, given that the photosensitive element is separate from the path across which voltage or current is measured. The apparatus may be fabricated of amorphous silicon. The light sensing cell includes an input terminal, an output terminal, a conductive element electrically interconnecting the input and output terminals, a multiple-state sensing device, means for establishing an initial state of the sensing device, means for changing the initial state of the sensing device in response to the incidence of electromagnetic or ionizing radiation (e.g., visible light) thereupon, and means connected to the conductive element and to the sensing device for modifying the conductance of the conductive element as a function of the state of the sensing device. A color filter may be interposed between a light source and the circuit or the array to provide color differentiation. Use of other filters and/or sensor types facilitates sensing electromagnetic radiation outside the visible light spectrum.
