Abstract:
Novel optical fiber cladding compositions containing fluorinated acrylamide monomers are described. The claddings are liquids at room temperature which possess excellent coating viscosities in the pre-polymerized state and are polymerized by actinic radiation.
Abstract:
Presented is a method and apparatus for precision control of work fluids in a squeezable tube that has no surge of work material during the shut off closing of the tube which is accomplished by a compensator moving simultaneously and oppositely to the shut off member movement, each of the compensator and the shut off member having different stroke lengths and tube engagable surface areas which effectively keep the internal volume of the tube the same. The method and apparatus are useful standing alone, in coordination with precision positive displacement pumping under computer control which is also presented, and as a part of sequential or simultaneous movement of a valve/pump dispensing head coordinated with a stationary or movable work piece to provide exceedingly fine control dispensing. Suckback between dispensing shots is coordinated with shut off and movements of inlet, outlet and dispensing members to afford operator programmable dispensing with precision and without drip.
Abstract:
Organic groups covalently bound to a polymer backbone provide second or third order nonlinear susceptibilities to the polymer. In another aspect, a method is disclosed for providing the novel polymers of the invention. Polymers of the invention can be directionally oriented to provide useful optically nonlinear media for use in nonlinear optical devices such as optical switches or light modulation devices.
Abstract:
Catalytic converters for automotive exhaust systems wherein thin, resilient, flexible, intumescent sheet materials are utilized as mounting mats for catalytic monoliths are disclosed. Multiple wraps of such sheet materials have been found particularly useful and cost effective for positioning and supporting ceramic catalytic monoliths which have a large cross-sectional dimensional tolerance within the metallic casing of the converter.
Abstract:
Fluoroaliphatic ether-containing carbonyl fluoride compounds are prepared by reacting a fluorinated carbonyl compound with hexafluoropropylene oxide in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from potassium iodide, potassium bromide, cesium iodide, cesium bromide, rubidium iodide, and rubidium bromide.
Abstract:
A retroreflective sheeting utilizing a particular polymer as the bead bond layer is disclosed. The polymeric bead bond comprises urethane and urea linkages, and has a stage prior to thermosetting in which it may be softened by the application of heat and in which it has a relatively nontacky character. The retroreflective sheeting disclosed possesses the unique combination of high reflectance and superior exterior durability.
Abstract:
An electrical stimulator for biological tissue utilizing an output current monitor. A drive circuit supplies a transformer output stage with the secondary winding of the transformer coupled across the electrode adapted to be connected to biological tissue. A current monitor and a reference impedance, being substantially greater than the load impedance, are coupled in series with each other and in parallel with the secondary winding and the electrode. In one embodiment, an additional current monitor is coupled in conjunction with the primary winding of the transformer and a comparator is used to compare currents measured by both current monitors.
Abstract:
A pressure-sensitive adhesive transfer tape of the prior art has an adhesive layer containing uniformly dispersed glass monofilaments which randomly cross each other but are predominantly oriented in the lengthwise direction of the tape and generally lie in straight lines. In contrast, the monofilaments of the transfer tape of the present invention are organic and have a randomly disposed, individually arcuate configuration as shown in FIG. 2. Unlike the prior tape, the novel tape can have high adhesion and shear values and yet be dispensed from an ordinary adhesive transfer gun.
Abstract:
A container (10) for longitudinally receiving a plurality of electrostatic sensitive electronic components (12) having a rigid, transparent, elongated channel (14) being open on at least one end. The channel (14) has a transparent, insulative layer (22) and a transparent conductive layer (24) at least partially transversely surrounding the electrostatic sensitive electronic components (24). Optionally, the interior surface of the channel 14 may contain an antistatic layer (27). Further optionally, the exterior surface of the container may contain a transparent protective layer (26).
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for diagnosing the extent of survival of the peripheral sensori-neural elements within the inner ear of a patient by stimulating the patient with one or more pair of electrical stimulus signals having a known amplitude and inter-signal delay, and by measuring the electrical activity within the nervous system of the patient which results from these stimulus signals and comparing the activity which results from the second stimulus signal with the activity which results from the first stimulus signal.
