A plurality of the oscillators are disposed in a line to acquire echo signals of a transmitted ultrasound beam. The determination index calculator calculates a determination index expressing a probability that the echo signal is a reflected wave from the surface of a cortical bone. The tracking start point setting component sets a tracking start point at a signal waveform timing corresponding to the echo signal for which the determination index satisfies a specific condition and that is received by one of the plurality of oscillators. The tracking execution component successively sets tracking points for the echo signals acquired from other oscillators using the tracking start point as an origin.

Construction of probes can vary by medical application. That is, a general radiology probe can contain multiple transducers that maintain separate physical points of contact with the patient's skin, allowing multiple physical apertures. A cardiac probe may contain only two transmitters and receivers where the probe fits simultaneously between two or more intracostal spaces. An intracavity version of the probe can space transmit and receive transducers along the length of the wand, while an intravenous version can allow transducers to be located on the distal length the catheter and separated by mere millimeters. Algorithms can solve for variations in tissue speed of sound, thus allowing the probe apparatus to be used virtually anywhere in or on the body.

Motion tracking is performed so that the parameter values derived over time are based on return from the same locations. The transducer includes element groups having different focal distances and simultaneously transmitting ultrasonic signals toward an object. According to the ultrasonic imaging apparatus using the multi-dimensionally arrayed transducer, a multi-focus transmission is performed. Thus, the multi-focus ultrasonic image may be acquired within a short period of time, thereby increasing frame rates, and a high-quality image in which all areas are focused may be quickly acquired.
