Abstract: A seal for closing a bearing cavity that has a bore and a wear surface at its end includes an elastomeric retaining band that fits snugly against the wall of the bore, an elastomeric seal lip that contacts the wear surface and creates a barrier to the passage of fluid along that surface as the surface rotates relative to the seal or vice-versa, and an impervious connecting section that extends between the retaining band and the seal lip. The retaining band contains several axially directed channels that communicate with the bearing cavity and are normally closed and isolated from the ambient atmosphere by flaps which are formed integral with the band and are highly flexible. As a consequence, the flaps will flex when subjected to a slight increase in pressure within the bearing cavity so as to expose the channels to the ambient atmosphere and thereby vent the bearing cavity.

Abstract: An elastomeric seal lip contacts a cylindrical wear surface along a sealing edge formed by the convergence of two conical surfaces on the seal lip, and accordingly a region behind the seal lip is isolated. On the conical surface that is presented away from the isolated region, the seal lip is provided with embossments that project toward, but normally do not contact the wear surface. However, when the seal lip is distorted by an increase in pressure within the isolated region, the embossments contact the wear surface and serve as fulcrums, enabling the entire lip to pivot sufficiently to lift the sealing edge away from the wear surface. This vents the isolated region and allows the seal lip to return to its normal configuration. The embossments may also function as elastohydrodynamic pumping elements.

Abstract: A multirow bearing for supporting a work or back-up roll of a rolling mill includes inner and outer races and tapered rollers arranged in two end rows and two intermediate rows between corresponding raceways on the inner and outer races. The inner race is a unitary structure, while the outer race is comprised of two double cups. The tapered rollers of the intermediate rows have their large ends presented toward each other and those ends bear against a center thrust rib that may be free to float in the axial direction so as to equalize radial loads between the rollers of the two intermediate rows. The radial clearance between these rollers and their respective raceways can be less than the clearance between the rollers of the end rows and their respective raceways so that the rollers of the intermediate rows carry most of the radial loading. Also, the rollers of the end rows can be at a steeper angle than the rollers of the intermediate rows, and are therefore better able to accommodate thrust loads and moments. The large ends of the rollers in the end rows bear against rib rings that are secured to the double cups of the outer race by seal cases which serve to unitize the bearing for handling purposes. Seal elements are bonded to the seal cases and they bear against the inner races to close the ends of the bearing.

Abstract: In a wheel mounting a hub rotates within a steering knuckle or other carrier on a double row tapered roller bearing of the indirect configuration. This bearing includes a double cup that is fitted into the carrier, a pair of cones that are pressed over the hub, tapered rollers arranged in two rows between the opposed raceways of the cup and cones, and a cage for each row of rollers. The retaining ribs on the cones have beveled surfaces so that as the hub is withdrawn from the steering knuckle, in which case one of the cones will be carried along with the hub, the beveled surface on the cone that moves with the hub will deflect the small ends of its rollers outwardly to enable the cone to pass through the rollers and free itself from the cup without shearing off snap rings or similar devices that secure the cup in place.

Abstract: A high speed bearing assembly for supporting a shaft within a housing includes two single row tapered roller bearings mounted indirectly so as to in effect create a double row bearing which is capable of accommodating thrust loading in both axial directions, as well as radial loading. The cones of the two bearings are clamped tightly together on a shaft with their thrust ribs and back faces presented away from each other. The cups are fitted loosely into the housing with their back faces presented toward each other. The housing contains a rigid spacer which is interposed between the back faces of two cups, and the spacer carries springs which urge the cups away from each other. When a thrust load is applied to the shaft, one of the single row bearings will take that load, the particular bearing being dependent on the direction in which the load is applied. The cup for whichever bearing takes the thrust load bears against the spacer, and the rollers for that bearing have their large diameter end faces in contact with the cone thrust rib for a full 360.degree. so that all are oriented by the thrust rib. The rollers for the other bearing, that is the bearing that does not take the thrust load, are likewise oriented by the cone thrust rib of that bearing for a full 360.degree., since the springs in the spacer bear against the cup of that bearing, urging it away from the spacer so as to impose a light preload on the bearing.

Abstract: A seal for a tapered roller bearing has a seal case which fits onto the bearing cone and an elastomeric seal element which is bonded to the case and has a primary sealing lip in contact with the front face of the bearing cup. The seal case includes a doubled back axial portion which fits around the thrust rib on the cone and is composed of inner and outer segments joined together at a tight bend. The inner segment embraces the thrust rib and has an inwardly directed radial flange extended from it, this flange being positioned against the cone back face. The outer segment lies against the inner segment immediately beyond the tight bend and has an outwardly directed radial flange which aligns with the inwardly directed flange. The seal element projects outwardly from the outer flange. The axial installation force required to press the axial portion of the seal case over the thrust rib is applied to both flanges and hence is transmitted through both the inner and outer segments. This avoids bell mouthing of the seal case and the accompanying inclination of the seal element. It further improves retention, while permitting the seal case to be pressed over thrust ribs manufactured with liberal tolerances.

Abstract: A system for determining an absolute position of a device includes a high resolution track, a sensor and processing unit associated with the high resolution track, a reference track having a plurality of pole pairs arranged to define a plurality of single-track Gray code segments, and an array of Hall effect sensors associated with the reference track to output a reference signal to the sensor and processing unit indicative of the coarse absolute position of the device over the Gray code segments. A third track has at least one pole pair. At least one sensor associated with the third track outputs a signal used to determine a location within one of the plurality of Gray code segments. The sensor and processing unit combines the third track signal, the reference signal, and the position of the device over the high resolution track to determine an initial, fine absolute position.
