Abstract: A machine learning classifier that diagnoses autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is described that transforms data obtained from a patient medical history and a patients saliva into data that correspond to a test panel of features, the data for the features including human microtranscriptome and microbial transcriptome data, wherein the transcriptome data are associated with respective RNA categories for ASD. The classifier classifies the transformed data by applying the data to the classifier that has been trained to detect ASD using training data associated with the features of the test panel. The trained classifier includes vectors that define a classification boundary and predicts a probability of ASD based on results of the classifying.

Abstract: Provided are processes and materials for solving biological or structural information about proteins or other organic molecules. The processes capitalize on a rigid multimeric nanocage formed from self-assembling substructure proteins. The processes and materials allow for recognition and tight, optionally covalent, bonding of any protein molecule with a tag complementary to a capture sequence on the nanocage. The processes and materials may be used to obtain biological or structural information by cryo-electron microscopy and overcome prior limitations of target protein size or salt concentration.

Abstract: In one aspect, compositions and wound dressings are described herein. In some embodiments, a composition or wound dressing described herein comprises a mesh formed from a plurality of biodegradable polymer fibers; a first active agent dispersed in the biodegradable polymer fibers; a plurality of biodegradable polymer particles disposed in the mesh; and a second active agent dispersed in the biodegradable polymer particles. The particles can be disposed within the interiors of the fibers of the mesh or between the fibers of the mesh. In another aspect, a composition or wound dressing described herein comprises a first perforated mesh formed from a first plurality of biodegradable polymer fibers; and a second perforated mesh formed from a second plurality of biodegradable polymer fibers, wherein the second perforated mesh is disposed on the first perforated mesh in a stacked configuration and the first and second perforated meshes have different degrees of perforation.

Abstract: Provided are methods, compositions and kits for generating beta cells from pluripotent stem cells under growth-factor free, defined culture conditions. The beta cells can be generated under conditions that are free of animal products. The generated beta cells secrete insulin, not glucagon, and the amount of insulin secreted is dependent upon the level of glucose stimulus.

Abstract: Provided are devices and methods for detecting the presence, absence, and/or characteristics of bacteria. A microfluidic device for characterizing bacteria is provided. The device contains one or more bacteria trapping channels, and one or more pneumatic channels in contact with the bacteria trapping channels, wherein the one or more pneumatic channels are configured to reduce the height of the one or more bacteria trapping channels to thereby trap bacteria in the one or more bacteria trapping channels if said bacteria are present in a liquid biological sample that is introduced into the microfluidic device. Also provides is a method for identifying bacteria that may be used with the microfluidic device. The method includes contacting a sample that contains bacteria with a carbon nanotube and microwave energy such that a probe is introduced into the bacteria. The probe is a double strand polynucleotide probe having a first strand that includes a detectable label, and a second strand having a quencher moiety that quenches a signal from the detectable label when the probe is double stranded. The method includes allowing hybridization between the labeled strand with a polynucleotide in the bacteria if bacteria are present, and if bacteria are present, detecting a signal from the labeled strand that is hybridized to a polynucleotide in the bacteria to thereby identify the presence of, and/or the type of bacteria in the sample, and if the bacteria are not present, determining a lack of a signal from the labeled strand.

Abstract: Provided are methods for prophylaxis or treatment of SARS-CoV-2 by administering a composition comprising one or more iminosugars to an individual in need thereof. The compositions may be administered to an individual who is at risk of becoming infected by SARS-CoV-2, or has been diagnosed with a SARS-CoV-2 infection. The iminosugars can inhibit SARS-CoV-2 cell entry and replication. The iminosugars potentiate co-administered antiviral agents, such as nucleoside analogs.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and other techniques for monitoring, including non-invasive monitoring, of biological markers based on the interaction, temporal association, or coincidence of brain activity and periphery activity in a mammal are provided. Systems and methods for generating a behavioral state-independent representation of cardiac activity and for identifying cardiac events and/or brain-periphery, e.g., brain-cardiac, temporal associations useful as biomarkers of disease such as, e.g., neurologic disease, in a mammal are also provided.
