    摘要: A light-emitting diode (LED) and a method of making the device utilize a thick multi-layered epitaxial structure that increases the light extraction efficiency of the device. The LED is an aluminum-gallium-indium-nitride (AlGaInN)-based LED. The thick multi-layered epitaxial structure increases the light extraction efficiency of the device by increasing the amount of emitted light that escapes the device through the sides of the thick multi-layered epitaxial structure. The LED includes a substrate, a buffer layer, and the thick multi-layered epitaxial structure. In the preferred embodiment, the substrate is a sapphire substrate having a textured surface. The textured surface of the substrate randomized light impinges the textured surface, so that an increased amount of emitted light may escape the LED as output light. The multi-layered epitaxial structure includes an upper AlGaInN region, an active region, and a lower AlGaInN region. The upper and lower AlGaInN regions include multiple epitaxial layers of AlGaInN. The upper AlGaInN region is made of p-type AlGaInN epitaxial layers, while the lower AlGaInN region is made of n-type AlGaInN epitaxial layers and undoped epitaxial layers. The undoped epitaxial layers may be layers of AlGaInN or other AlGaInN-based material. The multi-layered epitaxial structure has an approximate thickness of 4 micrometers or greater. In one embodiment, the thickness of the multi-layered epitaxial structure is approximately 7 micrometers. In another embodiment, the thickness of the multi-layered epitaxial structure is approximately 15 micrometers.

    摘要: A drill pipe (10, 100, 220, 200, 210, 250) is disclosed which includes a cylindrical pipe section (12), a box end (14), a pin end (16) and a hydraulic hose assembly (202, 18) or tube (212, 90, 260) inserted between the box and pin ends and extending within the cylindrical pipe section. All, or the majority of drilling fluid passes through the hydraulic hose assembly (202, 18) or tube (212, 90, 260). The interior surface of the cylindrical pipe section (12) may or may not be exposed to the drilling fluid but any corrosion generated by metal-to-fluid contact is generally trapped between the hose or tube and the pipe section. The reduced volume of the hydraulic hose assembly (202, 18) or tube (212, 90, 260) relative to conveying the drilling fluid through the interior of the cylindrical pipe section reduces significantly the waste of drilling fluid, allows the fluid to be pressurized more rapidly to initiate drilling operation, and limits fluid spill damage to the environment.

    摘要: Information is entered and validated by the operator of a dialysis machine by converting the entered information into a first form using a first conversion relationship such as ASCII. The information in the first form is next converted into a second form using a second conversion relationship, such as floating point numeric. Thereafter the information in the second form is converted back to the first form using the first conversion relationship. The information in the first form which resulted from the third conversion is displayed for acceptance for rejection by the operator. The multiple sequential conversions indicate the proper functionality of a safety system of the dialysis machine. Displaying the information resulting from sequential multiple conversions assures an opportunity for the operator to evaluate the entries for accuracy. Re-display of the previously entered information repeatedly presents the operator with an opportunity to recognize human-induced errors.

    摘要: A mining apparatus for utilization in recovering coal includes a series of four cooperating legs: a right fore leg, left fore leg, right rear leg and left rear leg. Each leg is formed from a box-like shield. An inflatable bag is provided in each leg. When a particular bag is inflated, the bag expands extending the leg between the floor and roof of the mine. When deflated, the leg retracts. A series of hydraulic rams connect the legs together. These rams may be expanded and retracted as desired to move the support legs relative to one another. In this way the apparatus may be moved in substantially any direction about a 360.degree. arc. A microprocessor controller controls the operation of the apparatus. In accordance with further aspects of the invention, a number of mining apparatus of the type described may be connected together in series to form a line for roof support. In addition, one or more of the apparatus may be connected to a coal conveyor or other mining equipment such as a pneumatic breaker to provide propulsion.
