Abstract: A variety of methods and arrangements for operating an internal combustion engine and one or more motor/generators in a hybrid vehicle are described. In various embodiments, the engine is operated in a skip fire mode. Depending on the state of charge of an energy storage device and/or other factors, the engine is operated to generate more or less than a desired level of torque. The one or more motor/generators are used to add or subtract torque so that the motor/generator(s) and the engine collectively deliver the desired level of torque. In some embodiments, the engine may be run with a substantially open throttle to reduce pumping losses and improve fuel efficiency.

Abstract: Systems and methods for aftertreatment system thermal management using cylinder deactivation and/or intake-air throttling are disclosed. Systems and methods for thermal management of an aftertreatment system are provided herein. A controller coupled to an engine and an exhaust aftertreatment system is configured to: receive a first temperature value associated with the exhaust aftertreatment system and a second temperature value associated with the engine; determine, based on comparing the first temperature value to a first threshold, a thermal management mode including a first thermal management mode or a second thermal management mode; determine, responsive to determining the thermal management mode and based on comparing the second temperature value to a second threshold, an operating mode for the thermal management mode including at least one of a first operating mode or a second operating mode; and initiate the at least one of the first or the second operating mode.

Abstract: A method of operating an engine is provided. An exhaust valve actuation fault is detected for a first exhaust valve associated with a first cylinder during a first working cycle. In response to the detection of the exhaust valve actuation fault, fueling to at least the first cylinder is cut off. Actuation of the first exhaust valve is attempted in second working cycles that follow the first working cycle, wherein the second working cycles are not fueled. Whether or not the first exhaust valve actuated properly during the second working cycles is determined. Operation of the first cylinder is resumed when it is determined that the first exhaust valve actuated properly. Operation of the first cylinder is not resumed when it is determined that the first exhaust valve did not actuate properly.

Abstract: A system and method for transitioning a firing fraction of a variable displacement internal combustion engine when generating a desired torque output. During and following the transition to the second firing fraction, a combustion recipe is ascertained and used operating the cylinders of the variable displacement internal combustion engine to generate the desired torque output. The recipe is preferably optimized for the engine operating at the second firing fraction, at least relative to the previous charge of the previous combustion recipe used with the first firing fraction.

One controller is configured to select a periodic disruptive waveform generated over a period of time to approximate that is associated with the vehicle being at idle, determine a first harmonic sinusoid from a group of harmonic sinusoids that reduces the error between an approximated waveform and the disruptive waveform, and initiate a supplemental quantity of torque during the period of time based on the disruption quantity of torque.
