The present invention relates to a design and microfabrication method for microgrippers that are capable of grasping micro and nano objects of a large range of sizes and two-axis force sensing capabilities. Gripping motion is produced by one or more electrothermal actuators. Integrated force sensors along x and y directions enable the measurement of gripping forces as well as the forces applied at the end of microgripper arms along the normal direction, both with a resolution down to nanoNewton. The microfabrication method enables monolithic integration of the actuators and the force sensors.

A PZT micro-actuator for a head gimbal assembly includes a pair of separate PZT elements and each PZT element has a body and a plurality of electrical pads. The body has at least two electrode-piezoelectric combination layers laminated together. The at least two electrode-piezoelectric combination layers are physically connected with but electrically isolated from each other. Each electrode-piezoelectric combination layer has at least two of the electrical pads thereon. The electrical pads extend out from the body of the corresponding PZT element. All the electrical pads of each PZT element are offset a predetermined distance therebetween to be electrically isolated. The present invention also discloses a head gimbal assembly (HGA) with the PZT micro-actuator, an assembling method for the head gimbal assembly and a disk drive unit having such HGA.

The invention relates to a method for the manufacture of substituted phosphanes and substituted phosphanes manufactured according to the method. Phosphanes, phosphane oxides, sulfides or selenides are used as ligands in coordination compounds. They play a central role in controlling the activity and selectivity of catalysts. The object is achieved by the invention by synthesizing heterocyclic substituents on aromatic groups by introducing acetyl groups. In this manner, previously unknown representatives of the families of phosphanes, phosphane oxides, sulfides and selenides are made accessible.

The present invention relates to a compact motorized rotational stage for microscopy applications and control methods for automated sample orientation/rotation. The rotational stage includes a motor, a rotational motion transmission mechanism, and a rotating sample holder for accommodating a holding device such as glass slides/Petri dishes of different sizes. Mouse embryos are used as an example to explain the control methods. A pattern recognition utility was developed for identifying mouse embryo structures. The transformation between the holding device rotational coordinate frame and the translational positioning stage coordinate frame is calibrated during image-based visual servo control. The polar body of an embryo is oriented through purely image-based visual servo control or through coordinate transformation and closed-loop position control.

The servo system comprises a first stimulus, a second stimulus, and a calibration system. The first stimulus causes the first actuator to move the head to at least two calibration tracks on the disk. The second stimulus causes the second actuator to move the head relative to the at least two calibration tracks. The calibration system generates a calibration factor based on the second calibration signal and the movement of the second actuator relative to each of the at least two calibration tracks.
