An optical lapping guide for determining an amount of lapping performed on a row of sliders in a process for manufacturing sliders for magnetic data recording. The optical lapping guide is constructed with a front edge that is at an angle with respect to an air bearing surface plane ABS plane, such that a portion of the lapping guides is in front of the ABS and portion of the lapping guide is behind the ABS. As lapping progresses, an increasing amount of the lapping guide will be exposed at the ABS and visible for inspection. Therefore, after a lapping process has been performed, the optical lapping guide can be inspected to determine the amount of material removed by lapping. The greater the amount of the lapping guide that is exposed and visible, the greater the amount of material removed by lapping.

A method for manufacturing a write pole for a perpendicular magnetic write head. The method includes forming a mask structure over a full film layer of magnetic write pole material. A layer of hard mask material such as conformally deposited alumina is then deposited full film over the mask and write pole material. An ion mill, such as in an Ar or CHF3 chemistry is then used to preferentially remove horizontally disposed portions of the alumina layer (hard mask layer), thereby forming vertical hard mask walls at the sides of the mask structure. An ion mill is then used to form the write pole, with the alumna side walls providing excellent masking for forming well defined write pole edges. A relatively gentle clean up process can then be performed to remove the remaining mask material and side walls. The use of the alumina side walls eliminated the need to use an alumina hard mask that extends over the entire top of the write pole, Because of this, after forming the write pole, a relatively gentle clean up such as TMAH etch and NMP can be used to remove the remaining mask and alumina walls from the write pole.

A magnetic head structure for use in perpendicular magnetic recording. The magnetic head includes a magnetic write head having a return pole with a magnetic shunt structure extending from the back end opposite the ABS. The magnetic shunt structure prevents magnetic field from the write coil from reaching and affecting the read head. More specifically the shunt structure prevents magnetic field from the portion of the write coil beyond the back gap (as measured from the ABS) from magnetizing a magnetic shield of the read head. The shunt structure is also configured so as to avoid stray field writing. The size and shape of the shunt structure is therefore, limited to avoid attracting stray fields that might cause such stray field writing.

A magnetic head including a media heating device that is fabricated within the magnetic head structure. The media heating device includes an electrically resistive element that is fabricated above the first magnetic pole layer close to the ABS surface of the head. A P1 pole pedestal is fabricated above the heating element. Electrical insulation layers are fabricated beneath and above the heating element to prevent electrical shorting to the P1 pole layer and the P1 pole pedestal that are disposed beneath and above the heating element, respectively.

A method for constructing a device such as a magnetoresistive sensor having an extremely narrow width (track width). A photoresist mask is deposited with an edge where an edge of the device is to be located. A layer of material that is susceptible to removal by reactive ion etch (RIEable material) is then deposited over this first mask. The RIEable material is deposited by a conformal deposition method so that it covers the edge of the first mask substantially the same thickness as it covers the other areas. A reactive ion etch (RIE) is then performed to remove horizontally disposed portions of the RIEable layer intact, while leaving at least a portion of the RIEable material at the edge of the sensor intact. This remaining portion of the RIEable material can then be used as a very narrow mask for defining a device such as a magnetoresitive sensor by ion milling.

Magnetic heads having write coil structures with reduced electrical resistances for reducing thermal protrusion are disclosed. In one illustrative example, a magnetic head includes a magnetic yoke; a write gap layer formed between upper and lower poles of the magnetic yoke; and a write coil having a plurality of coil layers. Each coil layer of the write coil extends continuously between the upper and the lower poles through a plane defined by the write gap layer. Preferably, the write coil is formed using a damascene process, such that each coil layer is wider than each coil separating layer. Such a structure provides for a relatively large amount of coil materials to be used, which reduces the coil's electrical resistance. This, in turn, reduces the heat generated by the write coils during operation. Further, either one or both of the lower and upper poles may include a horizontally laminated structure of alternating magnetic and non-magnetic dielectric layers to further reduce heating caused by eddy current losses. Since thermal protrusion is reduced, the fly height of magnetic head may be made relatively small with a reduced risk of head-to-disk crashes and disk scratches.

An apparatus for patterning a self-aligned coil using a damascene process is disclosed. Coil pockets are formed in a first insulation layer disposed over a first pole layer. A barrier/seed layer is deposited along walls of the coil pockets in the insulation layer. Copper is formed in the coil pockets and over the insulation layer. The copper is planarized down to the insulation layer. The self-aligned coil process packs more copper into the same coil pocket and relaxes the coil alignment tolerance. Protrusions are prevented because of the more efficient and uniform spacing of the coil to reduce heat buildup in the head during a write.

A magnetic recording disk drive has a disk with the magnetizations in the concentric data tracks oriented in the cross-track direction. The concentric data tracks are magnetically separated from each other by guard bands. An inductive write head has its write poles and write gap oriented to generate magnetic fields in the cross-track direction. The guard bands may provide magnetic separation by containing along-the-track magnetizations, in which case the write head also has an erase pole and an erase gap to generate magnetic fields in an along-the-track direction on the sides of the data tracks. A magnetoresistive read head has its free-layer magnetization direction perpendicular to the disk surface and its pinned-layer magnetization direction parallel to the disk surface and orthogonal to the free-layer magnetization direction. The read head may have magnetic side shields spaced from it in the cross-track direction to prevent magnetic flux from adjacent data tracks from reaching the read head.

A magnetic write head having a vertically laminated back gap structure and method of making the same are disclosed. The magnetic head is formed with lower and upper pole pieces and a back gap structure which connects the lower and the upper pole pieces in a back gap region. In one illustrative example, the back gap is a vertically laminated structure having alternating layers of magnetic and non-magnetic materials. Each alternating layer is perpendicular to both the lower and the upper pole pieces. This vertically laminated structure significantly reduces the eddy currents in the back gap region at high operating frequencies as the layers are oriented in a direction parallel with the magnetic flux.

A magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) memory array having a magnetically stable free layer that can be switched from one memory state to another with a minimum of energy input. The memory array includes a MTJ cell having an antiparallel coupled free layer. An electrically conductive word line passes through the free layer such that current passed through the electrically conductive word line induces a magnetic field that acts on antiparallel coupled layers of the free layer causing their magnetizations to rotate while remaining antiparallel to one another.
