The design of an air seal enclosure of the system and method of the present invention includes a combination of use of a multisurface silicone sealant between the bottom endbell and the air seal enclosure to provide a watertight joint that prevents water from entering the air seal enclosure. The air seal enclosure is formed from a suitable flexible material and is attached to a bottom endbell with bolts through holes in a periphery thereof. When tank liquid rises during flooding, the air seal enclosure provides a pocket of trapped air like a diving bell that prevents the tank liquid from ever reaching the bottom of the aerator.

The water resistant aerator design of the present invention includes a combination of known waterproofing techniques with new techniques for wastewater aerators comprising: use of a threaded joint and thread sealing compound between the lifting handle and the top endbell to provide a watertight connection between the parts; use of a single lip seal for the top lip seal that has over 18 degrees of wear motion before pressure is lost; use of a grease seal between the top lip seal and the top bearing to impede moisture from entering the motor; use of a grease seal between the bottom lip seal and the bottom bearing to impede moisture from entering the motor; use of a multi-surface silicone sealant between the bottom endbell and the air seal enclosure to provide a watertight joint that prevents water from entering the air seal enclosure; and use of an O-ring seal between the endbells and the stator shell.

A compost aerator for aerating a compost/liquid mixture. The aerator has a aerator pump located downstream from a liquid inlet. The aerator pump has a plurality of impellers mounted on a rotor which spins within a circular channel though which the liquid flows. The liquid is propelled through the channel by the impellers and, as the area of the channel decreases downstream from the impellers caused by the increase in diameter of the rotor, the velocity of the liquid increases. Air enters the channel upstream from the impellers and is drawn with the liquid through the channel. The diameter of the rotor then decreases significantly thereby causing the area of the liquid carrying channel to increase suddenly downstream of the widest portion of the rotor. Turbulence occurs in this area and bubbles are formed which are released from the outlet of the compost aerator into the compost/liquid mixture to perform aeration for bacterial breakdown.

An aerator for mixing a gas with a liquid has a motor, fan, rotating central shaft, housing enclosing the shaft, and an air flow pathway between the central shaft and the housing. Rotation of the shaft in the air flow path reduces friction in the flow path and increases efficiency. The shaft may be hollow to provide a second air flow path, also with a rotating shaft in the air flow path to reduce friction, increasing air flow volume and efficiency. A non-lubricated material bearing rotatably mounts the central shaft, and has openings to allow increased air flow through the aerator.

The device supports an operative unit including a propeller driven by a submersible motor, and a decompression chamber having at least one air inlet connected to a suction pipe that emerges above the open surface of the water, the decompression chamber having an air outlet as well. The propeller is entirely outside the decompression chamber. A hub of the propeller is hollow and communicates with the outlet of the decompression chamber and with the ambient. A conventional rotation seal device ensures the seal between the hub and the fixed part of the operative unit.

A mixing device employs a rotating hollow column or pipe that is motor-driven for rotation, is open at both ends to, at its upper or outer end, receive an inflow of a mixing fluid, such a gas or liquid, and its opposite or lower end, to simultaneously receive a co-axial inflow of a fluid-like or flowable charge material that is to be thoroughly and substantially uniformly mixed with the counter in-flowing mixing fluid. A positive in-flow of the flowable material from a container, for example, is effected from the lower end of the device within the column, to combine with the in-flow of the mixing fluid and premix therewith in a swirling movement with respect thereto at an annularly open portion of the column and, as thus premixed, enter one or more annular out-flow chambers defined by spaced-apart disc assemblies which are being rotated to generate centrifugal force to finally complete the mixing of the materials and project them annularly radially outwardly therefrom, as into the container from which the flowable material is being drawn by reason of positive inward or suction pressure generated by a powered rotation of the column and its attached disc assembly or assemblies. Each disc or plate assembly may be shaped to provide a desired type and direction of outflow of the now fully mixed material from the outflow chamber or chambers back into the container from which fluid such as a liquid is being drawn.

Apparatus for the treatment of liquids, including waste liquids, by aeration. The apparatus has a propeller, a motor and a leg extending between the motor and propeller. The leg includes a shaft coupled to the motor, the shaft driving the propeller. An outer housing of the leg generally surrounds the shaft. Air is drawn into and through the leg on rotation of the propeller within the liquid and is discharged into the liquid generally adjacent the propeller. In the improvement of the present invention, the shaft is solid while a tubular cantilever is supported at one of its ends within the outer leg housing in surrouding relation to the shaft. The tubular cantilever extends from its supported end away from the motor. Bearings support the shaft via the tubular cantilever at spaced locations along the shaft and cantilever.

Improved methods apparatus are provided for introducing and entraining air into a waste liquid, thereby increasing the quantity of dissolved oxygen in the liquid to enhance the aerobic treatment process. A power driven propeller is preferably positioned at the discharge end of conical-shaped transition housing, and draws in air while waste water is controllably introduced to the transition housing from below the surface of the water. The housing upstream from the propeller is primarily an air chamber with incoming streams of water, while the housing downstream from the propeller is filled with waste water having minute entrained air bubbles. The water and entrained air are thus discharged downwardly, and the axis of the equipment preferably inclined to increase circulation in the waste water pond or tank. The techniques of the present invention have relatively low power requirements while substantially increasing gas concentration in the liquid.

The apparatus is comprised of a hollow outer housing (22) and a hollow inner tube (24) received for rotary motion within the outer housing (22). A motor (61) is attached to the outer housing (22) adjacent a first end thereof and is drivingly coupled to a first end of the inner tube (24). The inner tube (24) has a support tube (214) which extends beyond the second end of the outer housing (22). Propeller blades (216) are attached to the support tube (214) for rotation therewith. An inlet (82) is formed in the inner tube (24) for admitting a gas to the hollow interior of the inner tube (24). The support tube (214) has a diffusion section (222) that extends below the propeller blades (216).The propeller mechanism (210), which includes the support tube (214) and the blades (216), is designed to increase the oxygen transfer efficiency of the apparatus (10, 212) over that provided by a standard marine propeller (48). Each propeller blade (216) has an impelling surface (232) with a varying rake which changes to a more positive rake from a leading end (226) to a tail end (228) of each propeller blade (216). Plates (238, 240, 242) are attached to the air outlet end (224) of the support tube (214). Lower portions (250) of the plates (240, 242) are bent backward in the direction in which the propeller mechanism (210) is to be rotated.
