Abstract: A multi-part automotive wheel comprises first and second wheel discs having first and second mating surfaces, respectively, where the first and second discs are to be joined to each other. An annular radial groove is disposed on one of the first and second surfaces for receiving an O-ring for sealing the first surface in respect of the second surface. The groove includes a substantially radial basewall and first and second sidewalls which extend from the basewall toward an intermediate section and from the section toward both edges of the groove, the edges defining a radial groove opening which is smaller than a distance between the sidewalls at the section such that an O-ring having a larger cross-sectional diameter larger than the opening will be retained within the groove prior to the discs being joined together. The basewall merges with the first and second sidewalls with rounded corners to reduce concentration of stress at the corners.

Abstract: A plastic wheel assembly comprises a wheel, a hub assembly and a rim having two side walls adopted to hold a tire onto the rim. Preferably the wheel is made of two molded plastic wheel halves, each having a wheel flange extending outwardly from the circumference of the wheel and contacting the rim side walls. The rim fits between the wheel flanges and is preferably made of metal. The wheel halves are preferably riveted to the flanges on the hub assembly. A method of making the wheel assembly involves connecting the first wheel half to the rim and then connecting the second wheel half to the combination of the rim and first wheel half.

Abstract: A tire rim assembly (16) permits inflation of a tire (10) mounted thereon only when the components constituting the structure are assembled in a locking configuration. The tire rim assembly (16) includes a rim base (18) having first and second grooves (32,34) defined on its outer periphery (30), an annular bead seat member (24) arranged around the rim base (18) and having an inner periphery (38) defining a load transferring surface (42), an inner surface (40), and an inclined ramp surface (44) located between the inner surface (40) and the load transferring surface (42), an elastomeric seal (26) is disposed in the second groove (34), and an annular split lock ring (28) is disposed in axially restraining engagement in the first groove (32) and adapted to contact the load transferring surface (42) of the bead seat member (24) with the structure completely assembled. When the lock ring (28) is omitted or improperly installed the elastomric seal (26) is free of compression and will not establish an air tight seal.

Abstract: A vehicle road wheel is disclosed having a safety groove adjacent its outboard rim edge but so as to be within a tire fitted to the wheel and within which a flexible band is fitted so that a tire fitted to the wheel has it outboard bead embraced between the flexible band and the outboard rim edge of the wheel. This enables the the configuration of the wheel rim to be simplified and hence the risk of damaging a tire when fitting it is minimized. The safety groove can be in a tire sealing member of annular form that is held in position around the wheel by inboard and outboard rim parts that are releasably secured together, this sealing member defining the outboard rim edge of the wheel. Abstract: A pneumatic tire and vehicle wheel assembly, the wheel being of the split-rim type without a tire mounting well in the base portion of the rim. A support member is provided extending radially fr0m the base portion of the rim to contact and support the tread region of the tire when the tire is wholly or partially deflated. The support member is preferably of L-section so as to have a cantilever flange to contact the tire and is preferably heat-conductive. A lubricant is preferably included in the tire cavity which will be between the tire and support member when the former contacts the latter. The support member is preferably adjacent one of the bead seats of the rim to serve the secondary purpose of retaining the tire bead on said seat. The support member may be an integral, radially outer part of the wheel disc or a separate, annular component surrounding the base portion of the rim.

Abstract: A rim for a pneumatic tire comprising two rim parts, the first rim part consists of a tire bead retaining flange and bead seating portion and is secured to a second rim part which comprises the other tire bead retaining flange. The second rim part is formed in the region adjacent the first rim part with a circumferentially extending radially outwardly projecting hump portion which is arranged to be capable of making air-tight sealing engagement with the bead of an associated tire seated on the first rim part.
