The invention relates to a PTO brake control system. There is a need for an improved and safe PTO brake control system. A PTO may be put into a driven and a non-driven condition an is braked by a PTO brake. A PTO brake control system includes a vehicle speed sensor and an ECU for controlling the PTO brake. The ECU deactivates the PTO brake when the vehicle is stationary and the PTO is not driven. This allows the PTO to be manually rotated to facilitate coupling of the PTO to an implement.

A method for adapting a drive train based upon a PTO load is provided. The method includes continually during vehicle driving determining a torque magnitude indicative of said power take off unit's torque consumption by sensing a fluid pressure produced by a power take off fluid pump. The sensed power take off unit torque consumption is continually compared with an output torque produced by a prime mover. Using the difference from said output torque expected value and the measured PTO torque consumption, a control unit adjusts transmission shifting (if automatic) of a transmission and/or prime mover control because the PTO will cause the prime mover to lose some of its available torque. Based on the PTO load, the engine control will selected the appropriate prime mover torque production and the transmission control unit will select the appropriate start gear, upshift gears, and downshift gears.

The engine is connected to an automatic stagegeared transmission by way of an automated vehicle clutch. At least one control unit is provided for controlling the transmission, the vehicle clutch and the engine. The control unit controls the rotational speed of the engine as a function of the position of the throttle lever and controls the transmission as a function of the position of a gear selector. The rotational speed of the engine is regulated by way of a control and the degree of engagement of the vehicle clutch is regulated by way of the throttle lever when the power take-off is engaged and a drive position is selected by way of the gear selector. The rotational speed of the engine is automatically reduced when equipment engaged to the power take-off approaches a limit position.
