    摘要: A spin welding apparatus is employed for hermetically sealing seamless overpacks. The seamless overpacks are utilized, for example, for isolating corroding 55 gallon drums which contain hazardous materials. The overpacks include a receiver which contains the 55 gallon drum and a cover which is spin welded onto the receiver. The receiver and cover have circular welding surfaces which oppose one another across a horizontal plane. The welding surfaces have a composition of heat fusible plastic. During the spin welding process, the cover is rotationally driven by the spin welding apparatus while simultaneously being forced downward onto the receiver, which is held stationary. Frictional heat melts the opposing welding surfaces. After the rotational motion stops, the opposing welding surfaces cool and solidify to form a seamless weld joint. During the spin welding process, the covers are rendered susceptible to centrifugal imbalance due their large size. The resultant centrifugal imbalance can couple to other components of the system. Several features serve to ameliorate this centrifugal imbalance: vibrational coupling between the receiver from the cover is minimized by the horizontal configuration of the welding surfaces; rotational imbalance transmitted to the drive shaft is damped by pillow blocks; the damping efficiency of the pillow blocks is enhanced by mounting the pillow blocks and the torque driver onto a linear positioning table for effecting the axial movements of the drive shaft.

    摘要: A spin welding apparatus is employed for hermetically sealing seamless overpacks. The seamless overpacks are utilized, for example, for isolating corroding 55 gallon drums which contain hazardous materials. The overpacks include a receiver which contains the 55 gallon drum and a cover which is spin welded onto the receiver. The receiver and cover have circular welding surfaces which oppose one cover which is spin welded onto the receiver. The receiver and cover have circular welding surfaces which oppose one another across a horizontal plane. The welding surfaces have a composition of heat fusible plastic. During the spin welding process, the cover is rotationally driven by the spin welding apparatus while simultaneously being forced downward onto the receiver, which is held stationary. Frictional heat melts the opposing welding surfaces. After the rotational motion stops, the opposing welding surfaces cool and solidify to form a seamless weld joint. During the spin welding process, the covers are rendered susceptible to centrifugal imbalance due their large size. The resultant centrifugal imbalance can couple to other components of the system. Several features serve to ameliorate this centrifugal imbalance: vibrational coupling between the receiver from the cover is minimized by the horizontal configuration of the welding surfaces; rotational imbalance transmitted to the drive shaft is damped by pillow blocks; the damping efficiency of the pillow blocks is enhanced by mounting the pillow blocks and the torque driver onto a linear positioning table for effecting the axial movements of the drive shaft.

A gap (70) between the inner wall (20a) and outer wall (56, 57) of the double-walled device (58) is preferably filled, depending on the application of the device (58), with a neutralizing, capturing, heat insulating, indicating, or strengthening substance. A given gap-filling substance can possess any combination of the properties mentioned above, among others.

The plastic coat forms a substantially plane surface which surrounds the bung socket and serves as an inscription field, wherein the inscription is formed at least in part by indentations in the plastic mass.

    摘要: An all-plastic drum construction permits a variety of sizes and capacity of drum by utilizing an extruded tube for the drum side walls of selected diameter and length proportional to the drum capacity desired. An injection molded bottom closure is welded to the bottom end of the tube by a thermoplastic bonding material having dispersed iron particles which are excited when exposed to induction heating thereby facilitating the melting of the thermoplastic. This welding material is disposed within a cavity defined by the bottom closure and bottom end of the tube and when subjected to induction heating and pressure fills the cavity to effectuate the bond between surfaces of the bottom closure and bottom end of the tube. A tight head drum is formed by securing by a similar welding technique a top closure to the upper end of the tube. In forming an open head drum, a thermoplastic chime is initially welded in similar fashion to the upper end of the tube. Thereafter, a top cover is releasably secured to the chime by a locking rim assembly.
