Abstract:
A stable aqueous dispersion and process for making the dispersion are provided containing hydrolyzed cellulose ester, organic solvent, water and acrylic resin having free acid functionalities that are at least partially neutralized. The dispersion is useful in coatings and can also contain surfactant and cross-linking agent.
Abstract:
The lubricious hydrophilic coatings of the invention are significantly more lubricious when wet than when dry, are adherent to a variety of substrates, and are resistant to removal by wet abrasion. In one embodiment, the coatings include a hydrophilic polyolefin such as polyvinyl-pyrrolidone and a water-insoluble stabilizing polymer such as a cellulose ester. The coatings may also include an adherent polymer and a plasticizing agent. The coating may be applied by preparing a solution of the stabilizing polymer and a solution of the hydrophilic polyolefin, and coating the substrate first in one then the other. Alternatively, both the stabilizing and hydrophilic polymers may be dissolved in a single solvent system and applied to the substrate in a single step. In another embodiment, only a solution of a hydrophilic polyolefin is applied directly to the substrate. In this embodiment, the solution of the hydrophilic polyolefin includes a cosolvent which acts as a solvent for both the hydrophilic polyolefin and the substrate. The coatings of the invention may be applied to biomedical devices and implants such as catheters, condoms, and nasogastric and endotracheal tubes.
Abstract:
Disclosed are polymer blends containing a minor amount of cellulose acetate and a major amount of cellulose acetate phthalate, cellulose acetate trimellitate or cellulose acetate succinate. The blends have reverse phase morphology, that is, the minor component forms a continuous phase. The blends are useful for zero-order controlled delivery of bioactive agents such as pharmaceutical and agricultural chemicals.
Abstract:
A coating composition adapted for repairing a damaged coating on a substrate comprises as the binder a mixture of a polyacrylate, an acrylated alkyd resin and a cellulose ester which form 100 percent of the binder. The coating composition is particularly well suited for use in preparing damaged paint on a motor vehicle body. The binder may be mixed with a volatile inert organic solvent for the binder in making the composition. The composition has a higher solids content than composition usually used for repairing damaged coatings and much thicker layers of the coating composition may be applied. By mixing the components of the binder in the ratio of 10 to 60 parts by weight of polyacrylate to 30 to 75 parts by weight of acrylated alkyd resin and 5 to 45 parts by weight cellulose ester to form the binder a coating composition having reduced tendency to crack and of improved solids content is obtained.
Abstract:
Transparent thermoplastic moulding compositions having improved mechanical properties consist essentially of a cellulose ester of aliphatic C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -carboxylic acids and a graft copolymer of an ethylene vinyl ester copolymer having grafted thereon polymerized units of vinyl esters and/or alkyl esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid and, optionally, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -olefins.
Abstract:
Method for preparing a polymer alloy which is stable and homogeneous at high temperatures which comprises a component (a) one or more polymers of high molecular weight, having anhydride groups and component (b) one or more polymers of high molecular weight, having groups which have the ability to interact with hydrogen atoms to form hydrogen bonds. Initially, a solution of component (a) is prepared in an organic solvent and thereafter a solution of component (b) is added. Component (a), in the dissolved state, may be protolyzed in whole or in part, prior to or after the addition of component (b) by the action of protolyzing agents. After the solvent is removed formed products, such as granules, fibres, foils, foam, may be made from the polymer alloy.
Abstract:
Partially etherified melamine-formaldehyde resins having a melamine: formaldehyde molar ratio of 1:(1.25 to 1) can be prepared by a condensation reaction under neutral or weakly alkaline conditions if the condensation reaction is carried out in the presence of a glycol monoether of the general formula IR (OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.n OH (I)wherein R denotes alkyl having 1 to 4 C atoms and n denotes a number from 1 to 5. The partially etherified melamine-formaldehyde resins are suitable for the production of compression moulding compositions having a high flow and minimal processing shrinkage and after-shrinkage.
Abstract:
A graft copolymer having a polymeric backbone with pendent hydroxyl groups; wherein the hydrogen atom of at least the one the hydroxyl groups is replaced by the formula ##STR1## where R is an aliphatic group, a cycloaliphatic group or an aromatic group; R.sup.1 is an alkylene group having 2-6 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 is a polymer segment of a vinyl addition polymer, such as butyl acrylate/hydroxyethyl acrylate; coating compositions of this copolymer can be cross-linked with conventional cross-linking agents such as an alkylated melamine formaldehyde resin or an organic polyisocyanate and coating compositions useful for flexible elastomeric substrates can be prepared from this copolymer.
Abstract:
Particular aqueous gels, epoxy resin compositions and optional additives such as diluents, retarders and accelerators are described which produce a practical composition and method for in situ sand consolidation and gravel packing by which a resin coated sand is positioned in a desired location and cured by an internal catalyst to form a porous permeable or plugged consolidated mass.
