Abstract:
Method and apparatus for suppressing noise in machinery a having movable element and fixed element in close proximity to the movable element is disclosed. The movable element and fixed element may coact to disturb the atmosphere and produce noise. A fluid system is provided for inducing a pressure variation proximate to the movable element and fixed element to thereby reduce the level of noise.
Abstract:
In an automatic spinning machine equipped with a traveling tender carriage capable of detecting the existence of an abnormal condition at a station on the machine and servicing the station to restore it to normal operation, an optical sensing system is associated with the carriage to optically sense the movement of the carriage into registration with a spinning station and provide an indication thereof by reflection from a curved specular surface situated at the station. Preferably the sensing system includes a plurality of sensing stages, the outputs of which are used to control the arrest of the carriage and its alignment with a station to be serviced according to a predetermined sequence. In a preferred embodiment, a pair of photodector cells is employed in each sensing stage and the signals generated thereby are compared electronically to detect when the cell pair is disposed symmetrically of the center line of the given station.
Abstract:
The instant invention is directed to an apparatus to enable the stripping of two or more bobbins at once. The mechanism provides for the tilting of a downstream bobbin by means of guides back towards an upstream bobbin so that a strand may be unwound from each bobbin without incurring breakage of a strand as the lead bobbin proceeds away from the stripping unit.
Abstract:
A method, and apparatus therefore, for lifting and orienting a bobbin regardless of the orientation of the bobbin ends upon a conveyor comprising grasping and lifting the bobbin through a pair of guides wherein the apical end thereof freely passes through its associated guide and the butt end is restricted by its associated guide to pivot the bobbin to a vertical position, with the apical end up, and raising the bobbin to a mechanism for further conveying of the bobbin to, for example, a spindle upon a spinning frame.
Abstract:
A novel process and apparatus for twisting filamentary material such as yarn is disclosed wherein yarn is twisted down stream of a heating means and intermediate of take-up and feed stations. Opposite sides of the yarn are contacted at successive points therealong thus gripping the yarn while both an advancing and rolling motion is imparted thereto. Such motion is imparted to the yarn in one physical embodiment of the invention by means of a pair of rolls provided with meshed teeth formed along circumferential surfaces thereof. The rolls in such embodiment are mounted in angular relationship to each other so as to permit the teeth of respective rolls to engage opposite sides of a filamentary piece of material passing between said rolls at opposite sides and at successive points therealong. Such contact along successive opposite portions of the yarn causes the yarn to take a continuous and essentially stable path between the rolls and enables a positive grip to be imparted to the yarn thereby overcoming the torque imparted to the yarn as a frictional twist component of the meshed teeth. The apparatus of the present invention may thus be characterized as a friction twist head and its method of operation a process for imparting false twist to filamentary material by frictional contact.
Abstract:
A fluid operated system controls a reversible fluid operated apparatus and is herein described in the form of a speed control system for a reversible motor such as a double-acting cylinder housing a piston. The piston is selectively driven in either of opposite directions by a pressurized operating fluid introduced into one end of the cylinder while the opposite end of the cylinder is vented. Control devices in conduits opening into opposite ends of the cylinder regulate the piston speed. If desired only one of the conduits may be provided with a control device so that the piston moves at maximum speed in one direction and more slowly in the opposite direction. Each control device includes a restriction to the flow of fluid through the associated conduit, and has a by-pass with a fluid piloted diaphragm valve about the restriction, the fluid pilot operatively communicating with the opposite conduit. When operating fluid passes through one of the conduits to operate the cylinder, the valve associated with the other conduit is piloted closed so that fluid vented from the cylinder passes through the restriction of the other conduit, thus retarding the venting rate of the fluid and slowing movement of the piston. If desired, one or both restrictions may be of a variable type.
Abstract:
An apparatus for sorting filled bobbins from empty bobbins. The bobbins are deposited on a platform which declines transversely toward a retaining surface so that the bobbins roll on the platform and against the retaining surface. Pushers segregate the bobbins from each other on the platform and move each bobbin serially from a wide portion of the platform onto a portion of the platform sufficiently narrow that larger diameter filled bobbins will roll overcenter across an edge of the platform to be collected in any suitable manner. However, the smaller diameter bobbins generally devoid of yarn are cradled on the narrow portion of the platform and the retaining surface and do not roll overcenter. Rather, the empty bobbins are conveyed to an end of the platform and are deposited in any suitable collecting means separate from the collecting means for the bobbins having yarn. The narrow portion of the platform is adjustable so that the edge of the platform over which the bobbins roll overcenter may be moved toward or away from the retaining surface for sorting different diameter bobbins.
Abstract:
A spinning frame having a plurality of spindles with bobbins thereon being wound simultaneously with yarn has a travelling service tender that monitors each spindle work station over a trip through all spindle positions to determine and correct malfunctions performed by an automatic service cycle performed at each spindle location work station requiring attention. Thus, full bobbins are detected and doffed, roll wraps are detected and stations disabled, flag down spindles are bypassed, and improper yarn feed is sensed and corrected by the service tender for each station encountered on a trip requiring such service. Stored data is retained to indicate the position and type of malfunctions and various indications of the machine performance and efficiency. Counters store data individually for each spindle and accumulate data for all spindles traversed. Provision is made to control the machine operation from either the detected or stored data by modifying the service cycles, the service trips, or shutting down operations if the danger of machine damage occurs. Alarms or other controls are operated from the stored data if the machine efficiency indicates the need for service outside the automatic tender operation, and the data is retained for indication of machine performance, efficiency and for trouble shooting analysis.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method and apparatus for producing a torquecontrolled voluminous set yarn. Novel false twisting means hereinafter referred to as a ''''whirler'''' is employed to impart a relatively low number of twists per inch to a torque stretch yarn by blowing air circumferentially around the yarn at a pressure and flow coordinated with the yarn tension and the amount of heat imparted to the yarn. The covering power of the yarn and the bulk or voluminosity of the yarn thus produced is enhanced and residual torque in the yarn is controlled uniformly throughout the length of the yarn which is treated. Also disclosed is a set yarn with high bulk and controlled torque characteristics, novel yarn packages, fabric produced therefrom and garments made from said fabric.
