An optical article is disclosed comprised of a support including a portion adjacent one major surface which is transparent to the electromagnetic radiation sought to be propagated, an organic layer unit capable of converting a portion of polarized electromagnetic radiation of a selected wavelength to its second harmonic wavelength, means for optically coupling into said organic layer unit polarized electromagnetic radiation of a selected wavelength in its zero order transverse magnetic mode, and means for receiving from the layer unit a portion of the electromagnetic radiation in the form of a first order transverse magnetic mode. The organic layer unit has a thickness which is at least 70 percent cf the wavelength of the zero order transverse magnetic mode and differs by less than 100 .ANG. from the thickness required for identical propagation constants of the zero and first order transverse magnetic modes. The organic layer unit is comprised of a Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett assembly of amphiphiles forming a first Langmuir Blodgett layer unit containing noncentrosymmetric organic molecular dipoles of a first orientation providing a second order polarization susceptibility to the first layer unit in excess of 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units, and a Y-type Langmuir-Blodgett assembly of amphiphiles forming a second Langmuir-Blodgett layer unit adapted to be coated on the first Langmuir-Blodgett layer unit containing noncentro-symmetric organic molecular dipoles of a second orientation providing a second order polarization susceptibility to the second layer unit in excess of 10.sup.-9 electrostatic units, but of opposite sign to that of the first layer unit.

A fully integrated electro-optic page-scanner comprises an optically-transparent waveguide made from an electro-optic polymer, and a linear array of electrically-addressable, spaced, parallel electrodes for selectively altering the refractive index across pixel-sized portions of the polymeric waveguide. Parallel addressing of the electrodes in accordance with the intensity pattern of a line of pixels to be recorded acts to modulate the phase front of an optical wave propagating within the waveguide in accordance with such line intensity pattern. Schlieren optics, also integrated with the page-scanner, convert the phase-front-modulated wave to an intensity-modulated pixel pattern which can be imaged onto a moving photosensitive recording element to record a two-dimensional (page) of image information. By using an electro-optic polymer as the waveguide, certain disadvantages of prior art scanning devices are eliminated.

Uncured rubber scrap may be segregated from metal and fiber contaminants by the method of first embrittling the scrap by immersion in a liquid cryogen, then impacting the embrittled rubber and magnetically removing metal, and then milling the remainder. Gas flotation is used during milling so that particles of rubber and fiber are selectively removed from the mill and subsequently classified by size, whereby most of the fibrous component is segregated from a remainder. The remainder is then worked so as to increase the surface area of residual fiber prior to further segregation of fiber from rubber by gas flotation. The combined milling and flotation procedure may also be used for separating components of other mixtures. Apparatus for embrittling and milling is described.

The suspension polymerization process which comprises providing a stirred, aqueous suspension of polymeric seed particles, adding gradually to the suspension styrenic monomer and polymerizing it therein, and continuing the addition of monomer as the polymerization proceeds, may be improved by introducing the styrenic monomer below the surface of the suspension.

The invention provides foam forming methods that comprise: (a) preparing a foamable system comprising at least one hydrohaloolefin; and (b) ensuring either (i) the substantial absence of long-term decomposition-inducing contact between said hydrofluoroolefin and an amine-containing catalyst; (ii) that an effective amount of surfactant is available in the system under conditions which prevent long term exposure of the surfactant to a long-term decomposition reaction environment; or (iii) a combination of (i) and (ii). Related methods, foamable systems and foams are also disclosed. Preferred embodiments provide polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams and methods for the preparation thereof, including closed-celled, polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams and methods for their preparation. The preferred foams are characterized by a fine uniform cell structure and little or no foam collapse. The foams are preferably produced with a polyol premix composition which comprises a combination of a hydrohaloolefin blowing agent, a polyol, a silicone surfactant, a catalyst and is further characterized by being substantially free of added water.
