This invention is comprised of new nonlinear optic polymers and a new Lanir-Blodgett (LB) film deposition scheme for which these polymers were designed. The invention is unique because it produces an electro-optic film which has never undergone electric-field poling nor high temperature treatment. It eliminates the dilution effect of the long hydrophobic alkyl groups, and creates stronger ionic bonds between the polymer chains. Finally, the invention reduces the time to make a film of a given thickness by at least half by virtue of depositing two polymer layers per stroke. The new polymers are comprised of asymmetric chromophores linked head-to-head by alternating two different kinds of bridging groups. One of the bridging groups contains one or more ionic groups, and the other bridging group contains one or more non-ionic, hydrophilic groups.

Compounds of the formula I ##STR1## in which R is a C.sub.1 - to C.sub.22 -alkyl radical, A.sup.1 and A.sup.2 are hydrogen or methyl or, A.sup.1 is hydrogen and A.sup.2 is the nitro group, and B is the cyano group, the nitro group or an electron-attracting organic group having a double bond which is in conjugation with the thieno�3,2-b!thiophene ring system, have a high dipole moment and a high polarizability and are suitable for purposes of nonlinear optics. If R in the formula I is a C.sub.12 - to C.sub.22 -alkyl radical, monomolecular layers can be applied to a substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett method. The resulting layer elements are suitable, inter alia, as waveguides.

The present invention concerns the fields of processes for producing an organic ultrathin film having polyacetylene linkages and the resultant films. In one embodiment the process for producing the film consists of the steps forming an acetylene monomolecular film on a water surface, applying magnetic or electric field to enhance orientation, irradiating the acetylene film with an energy beam to polymerize the acetylene film into a polyacetylene film. Other embodiments for producing the film consists of the steps of forming an acetylene film by chemical absorption, applying magnetic or electric field, and irradiating the film with an energy beam. The polymerized film is useful as an electrical material having high conductivity and as an optical material having non-linear effect.

A multi-layer Langmuir-Blodgett film having non-linear optical properties is described. Alternate layers of the film are composed of first and second elongate chromophore molecules extending transverse to the plane of the film in a Y-configuration. The molecules are sythesised so that when deposited in a Y-configuration they are non-centrosymmetric and therefore exhibit significant optical nonlinearity.

Dialkenyl diacetylenes, especially divinyl diacetylenes having liquid crystalline phases, are provided. In accordance with certain preferred embodiments, diacetylenes having liquid crystalline phases are provided which may be polymerized while in the liquid crystalline state to yield conjugated polymers. Novel nonlinear optical, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, waveguide, and other materials are presented together with processes for their employment and articles formed thereby. Such materials, processes and articles comprise diacetylenes and polymers formed from diacetylenic species, which polymers are amenable to close geometric, steric, structural, and electronic control. Accordingly, it is now possible to design, formulate and employ new diacetylenic species and polymers formed therefrom to provide nonlinear optic, waveguide, piezoelectric, and pyroelectric materials and devices having surprising efficiencies and degrees of effect. According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, diacetylenes which are crystallizable into crystals having a noncentrosymmetric unit cell may form single crystals or may be elaborated into a thin film upon a substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Such films may, optionally, be polymerized either thermally or by irradiation for use in nonlinear optical and other systems. According to other preferred embodiments, diacetylenes are covalently bonded to substrates through the employment of silane species and subsequently polymerized to yield nonlinear optic and other devices having high structural integrity in addition to high efficiencies and effects.

A procedure is disclosed for assembly of novel two-sided monolayer or multilayer device architectures out of self-assembly or self-organizing amphiphilic compounds derived from molecules that undergo a type of valence tautomerization known as asymmetric narcissistic reactions. The two-sided monolayer architectures are constructed by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) transfer or self-assembly (SA) techniques while the multilayer architectures are formed by Y-type LB depositions, where the two layers or bilayers of the assemblies are alternate depositions of mirror-image forms of the amphiphiles. The resulting three-dimensional supramolecular assemblies described herein are uniquely capable of commutation between two non-centrosymmetric states which have, on a macroscopic scale, an optically antipodal relationship and a third central symmetric state which is, accordingly, optically racemic. The inventive architectures are expected to be useful for constructing a variety of opto-electronic devices for application as chemical sensors or for the transmission, modulation, storage, or processing of information.
