    摘要: In general, the invention provides a magnetic head device and linear tape drive that widen the high frequency side of the servo range. In particular, the invention provides a magnetic head device comprising a magnetic head chip with multiple magnetic elements arranged for recording or playback of multiple tracks and a fine positioning structure that uses a bimodal construction that may widen the high frequency side of the servo range by increasing the resonant frequency of the magnetic head chip including the tracking structure and lowering the Q value of the resonance point. In addition, the invention includes a damping structure suitable for the fine positioning structure that improves high speed response by widening the range in which the magnetic head device can be used for a servo.     摘要: Method and apparatus for guiding a moving tape having a tape edge parallel to a direction of motion of the tape wherein the tape is received tangentially on a curved surface having an edge. Force applied to the tape is increased as the tape drifts farther away from a nominal position so as to move the tape away from the edge of the surface. Lateral motion of the tape is dampened by breaking up an air-cushion between the tape and the curved surface.

    摘要: The invention involves a novel method and structure for utilizing homeotropic vertically aligned nematic liquid crystal cells in the production of high contrast microdisplays. Two circular polarizers are used in order to propagate circularly polarized, rather than planar polarized, light through a liquid crystal cell. The use of circularly polarized light eliminates the liquid crystal director alignment requirements for the transmittance of light necessary for planar polarized light. With no director alignment requirement, it is possible to use perfectly homeotropic vertically aligned nematic cells irrespective of domain size and shape because fringing field induced director tilt will not decrease the transmittance of the liquid crystal cell.
