摘要: A vessel-occluding clamp relies on the shape-memory effect to partially or completely occlude a blood vessel or other body lumen, including bowel, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, and bile ducts. The self-actuating nature of the clamp allows the device work in tight places, be placed through trocars for minimal-access procedures, and forgo the need for conventional or specific applicators. In the preferred embodiment, a clamp according to the invention a pair of opposing jaws connected through a hinge and one or more pieces of shape-memory material associated with the jaws. The shape-memory material may be in the form of one or more wires which extend from the hinge to each jaw. The shape-memory material exhibits a transition temperature such that, when the clamp is exposed to internal body temperatures of the type experienced during a typical surgical procedure, the jaws close to close partially or completely occlude the vessel, and wherein the jaws open below the transition temperature for removal of the clamp or to restore flow through the vessel. The transition temperature is preferably such that the jaws open in the presence of cooling irrigation. Other stimuli, such as the application of an electrical current, may alternatively be used. In an alternative embodiment, a second shape memory material is used having a second transition temperature which, when reached, causes the jaws to open.

摘要: A stapling device utilizes heat recoverable material (the driver) having shape memory to drive staples through materials to be joined and in one embodiment, against an anvil for crimping the ends of the staples. The heat recoverable material, preferably a metal such as Nitinol, may have heat applied by a heater mounted on at least one surface thereof or by induction or other method of heating. If a heater is mounted on a surface of the driver, upon insertion of the driver into the staple device, the heater makes electrical connection with terminals for connection to a supply circuit. In a specific embodiment staples may be provided, fabricated from heat recoveralbe metal so that each staple may carry its own heat recoverable, staple driving element. The staple tines may have a heat recoverable shape with the ends of the tines directed toward one another so that staple closure occures as heat migrates from the staple driving region to the tines thereof. Alternatively, the heat recoverable staple may complete a circuit through the staple upon contact with the anvil, thus heating the staple. Alternatively, the staples may have a heat recovered state with the ends parallel to one another so that the application of heat will open the staples and permit ready removal.

摘要: A transluminally placed endovascular graft prosthesis includes a helically wound coil having a generally tubular shape and is made of a shape memory Nitinol alloy having a transition temperature in the range of 115.degree.-125.degree. F. After placement within a body blood vessel and upon heating of the prosthesis to its transition temperature, the prosthesis expands so as to become firmly anchored to the inside wall of the body blood vessel. After expansion the diameter of the lumen of the prosthesis is approximately equal to the diameter of the body blood vessel passageway. The prosthesis may also be used in other body passageways.
