A tubular filter element has a filtering material extending over a whole length and having in its interior a hollow chamber so that during a filtering operation the filtering material is loaded from outside with a medium to be filtered which passes through the filtering material from outside inwardly to the hollow chamber, a back wash aid arranged in the hollow chamber, a coaxial inner tube located in the hollow chamber of the filtering material and arranged at least at some locations with a distance from the filtering material so as to form at least one intermediate chamber, the inner tube having a tubular wall and being provided at least substantially in a lower longitudinal region with throughgoing passages extending through the tube wall and formed so that, for back washing of the filtering material a back washing medium is supplied opposite to a filtering operation on the one hand into an interior of the inner tube and through the throughgoing passages and on the other hand also into the at least one intermediate chamber and from the latter from inside outwardly through the filtering material.

In a filter apparatus 1, a central filter rod 6 is arranged in the interior 14 of a filter housing 2, the diameter d of which filter rod tapers in the direction of flow of the plastic melt. On the filter rod 6 are arranged filter discs 7 which are parallel to one another and have outer and inner diameters of equal size. The filter apparatus 1 operates as a continuous-flow filter apparatus in which the plastic melt flows in via an intake 4 and flows out via an outlet 5. A filter housing wall inner surface 3 tapers in the direction of flow of the plastic melt, so that a gap width h.sub.a (x) between a filter disc outer rim 8 and the filter housing wall inner surface 3 decreases in the direction of flow of the plastic melt.

A strainer for use with a dry hydrant having a fluid inlet comprises an inlet tube having a first end and a second end, the first end being substantially capped, and the second end being connected to the dry hydrant fluid inlet. A plurality of apertures are formed in the inlet tube and are disposed between the first end and the second end. The apertures are disposed in a substantially v-shaped pattern, whereby an apex of the substantially v-shaped pattern is spaced proximal to the second end. In one embodiment of the present invention, the apertures spaced proximal to the first end of the inlet member have diameters greater than diameters of the apertures spaced proximal to the second end of the inlet member. In operation in a dry hydrant system, the strainer provides for uniform suction zone throughout the inlet pipe, and provides uniform fluid drafting flow.

Filtration apparatus for the purification of various oil products such as combustion oil, lubricating oil, hydraulic oil, or transformer oil is disclosed, including a housing, a rigid, hollow core mounted longitudinally within the housing, and filter paper wound around the hollow core so that the oil flows axially through the filter paper in the housing from a high pressure end to the lower pressure end, and in which passages extend between the interior of the hollow core and the filter paper and a valve is provided for establishing fluid communication between the interior of the hollow core and the low pressure end of the filter.

Described is a filter apparatus equipped with tubular filter elements comprising perforated pipe sections with filter media attached to their outer faces. The flow of the liquid to be filtered is directed onto the filter bodies transversely of the pipe section axis. The filter bodies are preferably disposed in a circular array and interconnected to form a cage acting as a rotor revolving within a casing supplied with the liquid to be filtered. A plurality of such cages may be concentrically nested within one another, with neighboring cages revolving in opposite directions. This results in the creation of pulsing flow patterns in the liquid to be filtered, which act to prevent premature clogging of the filter media by sediments thereon (FIG. 6).

A composite cartridge type filter of the kind utilizing a hollow cylindrical body of bonded activated carbon and an interior filled with a particulate filter media bed is disposed within a housing such that raw unfiltered water passes radially inwardly through the carbon body, into the interior media bed and then axially through the media bed to an outlet in one end. To balance the radial flow of water through the carbon body and maximize contact with the particulate media bed, a flow distribution device is disposed in the interface between the carbon body and the particulate filter media bed to distribute a portion of the flow toward the end of the media bed which is remote from the cartridge outlet. In this manner, short circuiting of the water through the filter is eliminated, radial flow through the carbon body is balanced, and a substantial portion of the flow is forced to follow a path which carries it through substantially the full length of the particulate media bed.

There is provided an improvement in a waste effluent filter of the type including a tank, a generally flat fine mesh screen over the lower portion of the tank to define an underdrain cavity below the screen and a filter bed of particulate material having an upper surface and a lower general surface adjacent the underdrain cavity. The particle size of the particulate material being greater than the size of the apertures in the fine mesh screen. The filter improvement includes a jet creating grid for creating a plurality of upwardly directed hydraulic jets evenly distributed throughout the filter bed during the filtering of the effluent through the bed wherein the jet creating grid includes a plurality of nozzles in the bed itself substantially below the upper surface of the bed and above the fine mesh screen a selected distance to retain the lower layer of the bed undisturbed. As a further improvement a plurality of horizontal liquid jets are created as a network over the upper surface of the sand bed to scour the media surface during filtering. A further improvement in the filter is the creation of a plurality of hydraulic cleaning jets usable during backwashing along with a vertical flushing action through the screen from the underdrain cavity. Yet a further improvement in the filter is the provision of a chemical cleaning feature utilizing two separate and distinct chemicals injected into the bed for cleaning the filter bed. Preferably, the chemical injection uses the two sets of vertically displaced jets.

A method and apparatus for separating unwanted particulate material from a flowable material, such as hot thermoplastic polymer, wherein a stream of the flowable material with the particulate material entrained therein is fed to a body containing a filter element so that they pass in operative contact with the filter element with a velocity sufficient to maintain the particulate material entrained in the reduced flow as the filtered material passes from the stream through the filter element. As applied to a continuous polymer extrusion machine the method and apparatus permits continuous operation of the machine with highly contaminated polymer material.
