    摘要: A filler material, having a light weight, an increased mechanical strength, and various excellent characteristics such as damping ability, as well as a composite material and a structural material thereof are provided. The filler material comprises mats made of alumina fibers, and layers of hollow silica-alumina-microspheres which are dispersed of and affixed to the associated mat, with the mats and the layers alternately stacked with each other. The composite material comprises a matrix of aluminum in which the above-mentioned filler material is filled. The structural material, which contains therein a predetermined amount of microspheres enough to provide the material with a desired vibration amplitude-frequency characteristic, is applied to a head arm for supporting a magnetic head of a disk device, for instance.

    摘要: A method for fabricating long-length and/or large-sized dense filamentary reinforced monotapes. The method comprises forming a layered sandwich of matrix foils or encapsulating sheets plus foils around a reinforcing mat of collimated fibers and sealing the edges of the assembly. The sealing step is carried out with the sandwich formed to a predetermined arcuate configuration such that the sandwich can be coiled after edge sealing without buckling the encapsulating sheets or disturbing the filament alignment and orientation. The formation of the sealed, encapsulated preform can be carried out using continuous processing techniques. Subsequent processing, such as densification, can be performed with the preform in the coiled condition or after it is uncoiled to approximately the arcuate configuration of the sealing step.

    摘要: A fiber reinforced metal laminate and method of preparation. The metal layers are of aluminum or aluminum alloy. An aluminum containing solder layer is disposed on inner surfaces of the metal layers. The fibers are silicone-carbide, boron or silicon-carbide coated boron and located between the solder layers. These layers are heated under pressure to a temperature above the melting point of the solder and below the melting point of the metal layer.

The composite may have a very high tensile strength or modulus of elasticity by so choosing the other material. The layers are usually between about 100A. and 10 microns thick and may have a very thin layer of a third material deposited therebetween to improve bonding.

    摘要: Components, such as airfoils for jet engines and other complex shaped parts, are provided by fiber-reinforced, high-strength, lightweight metal matrix composites economically prepared to close dimensional tolerances by applying matrix tapes in side-byside relation to a contoured metal base sheet or foil and building up a body of the desired thickness and shape with superimposed layers of such applied tapes, which are then covered with a contoured metal cover sheet or foil. Each layer may be bonded to the underlying layer by resistance diffusion bonding, and the cover sheet is bonded to the base sheet prior to hot pressing the entire assembly to the finished size and shape. The tapes are preferably composed of refractory filaments, such as boron, running lengthwise, and embedded in a metal matrix which is fully consolidated. The metal matrix and base and cover sheets are preferably composed of aluminum or titanium alloys, and the interior of the covered article is preferably evacuated prior to pressure bonding.
