A mobile terminal affixed to an asset initiates a collection of global positioning system satellite measurements (e.g., code phase) based on a hardware trigger generated by a low earth orbit satellite modem. Timing information reflective of the time of the hardware trigger pulse is transmitted to an operations center along with the global positioning system satellite measurements to enable the operations center to determine a position of the mobile terminal.

There may be at least (i) location-determination information of a first type and (ii) location-determination information of a second type. The location-determination information of the first type may facilitate low-resolution location determinations in the physical setting and the location-determination information of the second type may facilitate high-resolution location determinations in the physical setting. Based on the physical setting and the particular topography, location-determination information may be selected from at least (i) the location-determination information of the first type or (ii) the location-determination information of the second type. At least some of the selected location-determination information may be used to estimate a location of the WCD.

In a positioning system, an arithmetic processor analyzes positioning data acquired by a receiving terminal and determines a positioning target location. Upon reception of positioning data, the arithmetic processor accumulates the positioning data on analysis data stored in a storage section prior to the reception, stores an accumulated data as new analysis data, and transmits an analysis result to the receiving terminal. The receiving terminal transmits positioning data, acquired for a predetermined time, to the arithmetic processor and continues to acquire positioning data. Upon reception of the analysis result, the receiving terminal determines whether the analysis result is good or poor. When the analysis result is poor and the positioning data is stored for the predetermined time from a last transmission of the positioning data, the receiving terminal transmits the positioning data to the arithmetic processor and continues to acquire positioning data. If the analysis result is good, the receiving terminal completes positioning of the positioning target location.

A system and method is provided for determining the geographic location of a three-dimensional metrology instrument. The three-dimensional metrology instrument includes a geographic location determination circuit, such as a GPS. The geographic location determination circuit allows the metrology instrument to synchronize the instruments internal clock to allow cooperative measurements with multiple metrology instruments. The geographic location determination circuit further allows for automatic localization of configuration parameters of the metrology instrument. The geographic location determination circuit still further allows for the recording of location when predetermined environmental events occur.
