A method for the production of 2,4,6-tri(3,5-ditertiary butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)mesitylene which resides in treating a mesitylene solution in chloroalkane simultaneously with sulfuric acid used as a catalyst and a solution of 2,6-ditertiary butyl-4-methoxymethylphenol or bis-3,5-ditertiary butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl ether in chloroalkane at a temperature of -20.degree. to +20.degree. C. This results in a reaction mixture consisting of an acid phase and an organic phase including the target product. The phases are separated. The organic phase is subjected to neutralization by the treatment thereof with gaseous ammonia used as an alkaline agent. The precipitate of ammonium sulfate is separated and chloroalkane is removed from the remaining solution.The proposed method makes it possible to obtain the target product with a yield of 88 to 90% and a melting temperature of 239.degree. to 239.5.degree. C.The method prevents the formation of effluents, and the amount of phenol wastes is considerably reduced.

A process for the preparation of 4,4' dihydroxydiphenyl by acidifying an alkali metal salt of 4,4' dihydroxydiphenyl. The alkali metal salt of 4,4' dihydroxydiphenyl is prepared by fusion of an alkali metal hydroxide with alkali metal diphenyl 4,4' disulfonic acid. Because the reaction may be carried out in granular form, or in a reaction which is made highly fluid by using potassium hydroxide with potassium diphenyl 4,4' disulfonic acid, or by reacting the alkali metal 4,4' disulfonic acid in increments with the hydroxide, low molar ratios of hydroxide to alkali metal diphenyl 4'4, disulfonic acid may be used. When potassium diphenyl 4,4' disulfonic acid is used in accordance with the invention, it is prepared by reacting 4,4' diphenyl disulfonic acid with an inorganic neutral potassium salt.

Meta,para-substituted isopropylidene bisphenols are provided and methods for making such materials. Phenol, or substituted phenol is condensed with a meta-substituted isopropenyl phenol or a meta-hydroxy-.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The resulting meta,para-substituted isopropylidene bisphenols can be used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride resins and as intermediates for making high performance thermoplastics having chemically combined meta,para-isopropylidene diphenoxy units.
