Abstract: An equalizer valve is configured to stay shut when pressure on one side or the other goes up. A dynamic seal and a metal to metal seal are located within the housing. Pressure from above is directed uphole of the metal to metal seal and downhole of the larger dynamic seal for a net closing force. Pressure from downhole is directed between the metal to metal and dynamic seals for a net force uphole to keep the metal seal closed. Normal operation is from a control line moving a rod piston to move a valve member to open the metal to metal seal for flow through the valve body.

Abstract: A hydraulic tool includes a stator, a rotor, and a removable coating. At least one of the stator and the rotor comprises a resilient material. The removable coating has a thickness selected to compensate for expected swelling of the resilient material or an expected contraction of a clearance between the rotor and the stator based on thermal expansion. The removable coating is disposed on a surface of at least one of the rotor and the stator, and the removable coating is formulated to be removed during operation of the hydraulic tool. A method of operating a hydraulic tool includes passing a fluid through the hydraulic tool during rotation of the rotor within the stator and removing at least a portion of the removable coating responsive to rotation of the rotor within the stator as a volume of the resilient material increases responsive to contact with the fluid passing through the hydraulic fluid.

Abstract: An earth-boring tool having at least one cutting element with a multi-friction cutting face provides for the steering of formation cuttings as the cuttings slide across the cutting face. The multi-friction cutting element includes a diamond table bonded to a substrate of superabrasive material. The diamond table has a cutting face formed thereon with a cutting edge extending along a periphery of the cutting face. The cutting face has a first area having an average surface finish roughness less than an average surface finish roughness of a second area of the cutting face, the two areas separated by a boundary having a proximal end proximate a tool crown and a distal end remote from the tool crown.

Abstract: Systems and methods for constructing electric motors in which rotor sections are individually keyed to a rotor shaft such that, in a resting position, the rotor sections are circumferentially shifted (“clocked”) with respect to each to mitigate effects of harmonic feedback, torsional flexibility and the like. In one embodiment, a system includes an electric drive, and an ESP coupled to it by a power cable. The ESP motor has a rotor in which multiple permanent-magnet rotor sections are mounted to a shaft. Within each rotor section, permanent magnets are positioned in two or more axially aligned rows. Adjacent rotor sections are clocked with respect to each other so that, in operation, the rows of permanent magnets in the different rotor sections are positioned to counter the harmonic feedback or to use torsional deflection to equalize torque contributions from the different rotor sections.

Abstract: Methods for forming cutting elements, methods for forming polycrystalline compacts, and related polycrystalline compacts are disclosed. Grains of a hard material are subjected to a high-pressure, high-temperature process to form a polycrystalline compact. Inclusion of at least one relatively quick spike in system pressure or temperature during an otherwise plateaued temperature or pressure stage accommodates formation of inter-granular bonds between the grains. The brevity of the peak stage may avoid undesirable grain growth. Embodiments of the methods may also include at least one of oscillating at least one system condition (e.g., pressure, temperature) and subjecting the grains to ultrasonic or mechanical vibrations. A resulting polycrystalline compact may include a high density of inter-granularly bonded hard material with a minimized amount of catalyst material, and may provide improved thermal stability, wear resistance, toughness, and behavior during use of a cutting element incorporating the polycrystalline compact.

Abstract: Apparatuses and methods are provided herein that may improve sensitivity to transient signals. For example, an electromagnetic sensor for downhole measurements that includes a plurality of sectors (e.g., four quadrants) is provided herein. Each quadrant may include a magnetic core formed of a material with a high initial magnetic permeability to improve sensitivity to transient signals. A sensor for continuous wave induction tools is also provided, and may include a magnetic core formed of a material with a high initial magnetic permeability. Forming each sector magnetic core of a material with a high mechanical reliability may allow the magnetic core of the corresponding sensor to be pliable and flexible and not brittle and prone to breaking. Furthermore, the corresponding sensor may have enhanced sensitivity, greater stability of sensitivity relative to temperature changes, and high mechanical reliability.

Abstract: A method of obtaining a hydrocarbon material from a subterranean formation comprises forming a flooding suspension comprising degradable particles and a carrier fluid. The flooding suspension is introduced into a subterranean formation containing a hydrocarbon material to form an emulsion stabilized by the degradable particles and remove the emulsion from the subterranean formation. At least a portion of the degradable particles are degraded to destabilize the emulsion. An additional method of obtaining a hydrocarbon material from a subterranean formation, and a stabilized emulsion are also described.
