摘要: The present invention is drawn to generating attenuated and less cytopathic forms of New World alphaviruses that can be used in immunogenic compositions as vaccines against both Old and New World alphaviruses. In this regard, the present invention discloses that the N-terminal, ˜35-aa-long peptide of VEEV, EEEV and, most likely, of WEEV capsid proteins plays the most critical role in the downregulation of cellular transcription and development of cytopathic effect. The identified, VEEV-specific peptide, CVEE30-68, includes two domains with distinguished functions. The integrity of both domains determines not only the intracellular distribution of CVEE, but is also essential for direct capsid function in the inhibition of transcription. The replacement of the N-terminal fragment of CVEE by its SINV-specific counterpart in VEEV TC-83 genome does not affect virus replication in vitro, but makes it less cytopathic and more attenuated in vivo.

摘要: Apparatus and methods for detecting evaporation conditions in an evaporator for evaporating metal onto semiconductor wafers, such as GaAs wafers, are disclosed. One such apparatus can include a crystal monitor sensor configured to detect metal vapor associated with a metal source prior to metal deposition onto a semiconductor wafer. This apparatus can also include a shutter configured to remain in a closed position when the crystal monitor sensor detects an undesired condition, so as to prevent metal deposition onto the semiconductor wafer. In some implementations, the undesired condition can be indicative of a composition of a metal source, a deposition rate of a metal source, impurities of a metal source, position of a metal source, position of an electron beam, and/or intensity of an electron beam.

摘要: A modular ceiling fan housing unit designed to create a focused column or columns of downwardly moving air such that there is little deflection when the column or columns of downwardly moving air arrives at the ground level. The modular ceiling fan housing includes an elongated body element having a fluid impelling device to create the downwardly moving air. At least one plate disposed within the elongated body element directs the downwardly moving air into columns. The modular ceiling fan housing unit may be coupled to another modular ceiling fan housing unit to provide additional columns of downwardly moving air. The modular ceiling fan housing units may be coupled in various configurations, depending on the type of application. Furthermore, the modular ceiling fan housing unit or multiple modular fan housing units may be coupled to an elevated structure located either above or below the housing units.

摘要: A spinal stabilization system includes an implant and instrumentation for stabilizing the spine. In one embodiment, the system includes a plate having a side rail and a channel extending adjacent the side rail. A pedicle screw assembly is positioned in the channel in releasable engagement with the side rail. The pedicle screw assembly includes a polyaxial screw seated in a lower housing having a lower locking flange. An upper housing having an upper locking flange secures the plate to the lower housing. The side rail of the plate is releasably engaged between the upper locking flange and the lower locking flange. The upper and lower housings include on-board locking mechanisms for fixing components in the screw assembly. The screw assembly and plate are inserted and oriented by remote manipulation. Minimally invasive techniques for inserting the implant are performed with the instrumentation, and cause minimal disturbance to surrounding tissue.
