A method and an apparatus for transmitting broadcast signals thereof are disclosed. The apparatus for transmitting broadcast signals comprises an encoder for encoding DP (Data Pipe) data corresponding to each of a plurality of DPs, wherein the each of a plurality of DPs carries at least one service component, a mapper for mapping the encoded DP data onto constellations, a time interleaver for time interleaving the mapped DP data at DP level by skipping cells having zero values of the DP data, a frame builder for building at least one signal frame including the time interleaved DP data, a modulator for modulating data in the built at least one signal frame by an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex) scheme and a transmitter for transmitting the broadcast signals having the modulated data.

A broadcast signal receiver according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a synchronization and demodulation unit configured to perform signal detection and OFDM demodulation on a received signal, a frame parser configured to parse the signal frame of the received signal, a time deinterleaving unit configured to deinterleave LDM data, a first demapping/decoding unit configured to obtain the data of a core layer by demapping and FEC-decoding the LDM data, an interference removal unit configured to remove the core layer data from the LDM data and to output the data of an enhanced layer, and a second demapping/decoding unit configured to demap and FEC-decode the enhanced layer data.

The method comprises receiving the broadcast signal; an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) demodulating on the received broadcast signal; parsing at least one signal frame from the demodulated broadcast signal to extract service data or service component data; converting the service data or service component data into bits; decoding the converted bits; and outputting a data stream comprising the decoded bits.

The OFDM generation module includes a pilot signal insertion module configured to insert a pilot signal including Continual Pilots (CP) and Scattered Pilots (SP) into the transmission broadcast signal, and the CPs are inserted into every symbol of the signal frame, and location and number of the CPs are determined based on a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) size.

The method for transmitting the broadcast signal according to the present invention may comprise the steps of: formatting input streams into multiple data pipes (DPs); encoding data of the multiple DPs according to a code rate for each DP; generating at least one signal frame by mapping the encoded data of the multiple DPs; and modulating data of the generated signal frame in an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme, and transmitting the broadcast signal including data of the modulated signal frame.
