A method for restoration of stability and painfree rotation of the distal radio-ulna joint is based on raising the capsulo-retinacular flap by dissection off the dorsal part of the triangular fibro-cartilage complex distally and off the neck of the ulna proximally. After resection of the ulna head and reaming the distal end of the ulna to an appropriate depth and inserting the prosthesis into a suitable position the dorsal aspect of the triangular fibro-cartilage complex is reattached to the underside of the flap. Finally, the flap is reattached to the sigmoid notch of the radius and the wound is closed. By this way, painfree forearm rotation is restored and at the same time any length discrepancy is corrected.

A lunate implant includes a one-piece, at least semi-rigid body defining a triquetrum face, a scaphoid face, a cupped, concave, distal surface adapted to articulate with the capitate bone, a proximal surface, a plamar surface and a dorsal surface. A pair of spaced, generally parallel suture passages extend between and open through the triquetrum and scaphoid faces. A pair of sutures are stitched to ligaments of the wrist. The ends of the sutures are passed through the suture passages so that one of the sutures has ends extending away from the triquetrum face and the other suture has ends extending away from the scaphoid face. The ends are grasped and the lunate implant is pulled down into the desired position in the distal carpal row of the wrist. The sutures are tied adjacent the implant to stabilize and position the implant.

A flexible implant for replacement of the lunate bone of the wrist includes a one-piece body of resilient material defining a planar triquetrum face having a general U-shape in plan and further including a stabilizing stem extending outwardly from and perpendicular to the planar triquetrum face and a planar scaphoid face having a generally U-shape in plan extending at an angle with respect to the triquetrum face. The body further includes a cupped, concave, smooth distal surface adapted to articulate with the head of the capitate bone. The body defines a proximal surface having a smooth convex shape and extending between the proximal edges of the triquetrum and scaphoid faces. Generally planar palmar and dorsal surfaces extend between the dorsal lateral edges and the palmar lateral edges of the triquetrum and scaphoid faces.

The implant includes a radial component adapted for insertion in the radius, the radial component supporting a pin member with a waisted central location, a ring of low-friction material with a part-spherical outer surface and a central passageway complementary with the pin member so that it can be snap-fitted thereover, and a metacarpal component adapted to be inserted in the third metacarpal and defining a receiving portion which has a part-spherical cavity adapted to receive the ring snugly but rotatably.

Wrist joint prosthesis. As a replacement for the joint in a human wrist, there is provided a prosthesis permitting both vertical motion, sidewise motion and rotary motion but preventing twisting motion around an axis projecting from and parallel with the lower forearm. For this purpose, there is provided a metal socket fitted with a prong receivable into a bone of the forearm. A plastic cup made of material self-lubricating with respect to such metal socket is fitted within said socket, snappable thereinto to resist but not prevent withdrawal therefrom and having a rectangular projection-and-slot relationship with said metal socket to permit relative motion with respect thereto in only a single plane. A metal ball is receivable into the recess of said plastic cup, snappable therewith to resist but not prevent withdrawal therefrom and has a rectangular projection-and-slot relationship with the inside of said plastic cup to permit relative movement with respect thereto in only a single plane, said plane being substantially perpendicular to said first-named plane. Suitable projections are provided on said ball for reception into the bones of selected fingers, normally the index and middle finger. Placement of said prosthesis in one position or a mirror image thereof will render said prosthesis without other change adaptable for use with one hand or the other hand as desired.

A prosthesis for the trapezium of the thumb carpometacarpal joint comprising an integral elastomeric member configured to include a generally cylindrical portion, having extending from one end thereof an elongated, longitudinally extending tapered portion adapted to be embedded into a reamed out-channel in the thumb metacarpal bone, while the opposite end of said cylindrical portion is slightly concave to conform to the navicular bone, and wherein said cylindrical portion includes a transverse aperture. In the subject method following the step of implanting the tapered projection of the subject prosthesis in the thumb metacarpal bone, the axis of the aperture is aligned perpendicular to the plane of the thumb, and a segment of the flexor carpi radialis tendon is then passed over the cylindrical portion of said prosthesis and down through the aperture, and then fixed to the main portion of said tendon, thereby forming a reinforced structure to inhibit dislocation of the prosthesis.

A female component is configured to couple to a bone on an opposite side of the joint and includes a cavity that is surrounded by an inner articulation surface. An opening of the cavity is shaped to enable insertion of the outer articulation surface into the cavity when the outer articulation surface is aligned with the opening, and to prevent separation of the male component from the female component when rotated so as not to align with the opening. The neck is located within the opening and the outer articulation surface is rotatable within the outer articulation surface with a rotation that is limited by dimensions of the opening and the neck.

A method of manufacturing at least one component of a joint prosthesis, the method comprising creating a first database representing an anatomy of an articulating bone of a joint of a subject; accessing a second database representing a geometry of a generic prosthetic component being sized to fit around an outer articulating surface of the articulating bone of the joint of the subject; creating a third database representing kinematic data of the subject's joint; merging the databases within a three-dimensional image-based medium. The generic prosthetic component is attached to the outer articulating surface of the articulating bone of the joint creating a prosthetic articulating surface that is moved through the kinematic data of the subject through a bearing template thereby modifying the bearing template to create a kinematically appropriate bearing surface; and manufacturing the component of the joint prosthesis to have a geometry corresponding to the kinematically appropriate bearing surface.
