Abstract:
A steel cord having a strand construction formed by twisting a plurality of sheath strands each formed by twisting plural filaments around a core strand formed by twisting plural filaments is provided. At least one of the core strand and the sheath strands has a construction of twisting one or more sheath layers each made of plural filaments around a core made of one or plural filaments, and a diameter of a filament constituting an outermost sheath layer is made larger than that of a filament constituting at least one layer located inside thereof, whereby precedent breakage in a part of the filaments is avoided to improve the durability of the steel cord.
Abstract:
A plastic impregnated wire rope is provided with plastic bands between its core and its outer strands so as to prevent contact between the wires of the core and those of the outer strands during flexing of the rope. This produces a substantial increase in the life of the rope. The method for manufacturing such rope involves wrapping plastic bands on the core just prior to laying outer strands on the core and on top of the plastic bands. Thereafter, the so formed rope is impregnated with molten plastic, which is then allowed to solidify.
Abstract:
A hybrid cord is presented for use in the reinforcement of elastomers. The hybrid cord is characterized by having a core steel filament, a first layer of one or more nonmetallic filaments which are wrapped about the steel filament in the core, and a second layer of from 4 to 12 steel filaments which are wrapped about the first layer.
Abstract:
A steel cord for the reinforcement of rubber articles has a three-layer twisting structure comprising a core of 2 steel filaments, a middle sheath layer of 6 steel filaments and an outer sheath layer of 11 steel filaments, in which a ratio of filament diameter ds in the middle and outer sheath layers to filament diameter dc in the core (ds/dc) is within a range of 1.15-1.5 and a twisting pitch of the core is not less than 20 mm, and is used as a reinforcing member in a heavy duty pneumatic radial tire, conveyor belt and the like.
Abstract:
A method of manufacture and a resultant cable structure of elliptical stranded cable which optimizes the use of existing conventional stranding machines. In accordance with the present invention, one or more layers of shaped, non-circular, wires are interposed to provide support between the inner core of substantially round wires each having essentially the same diameter and the outer layer of round wires of different diameters, which outer layer includes round wires of different diameters which are arranged to provide the minor and major axes of the elliptical cable. The shaped wires are preferably trapezoidal in shape. Alternatively, the shaped wires may be arcuately shaped elliptical wires subtending an angle determined by dividing 360.degree. by the number of shaped wires (for example, 30.degree. for a twelve wire layer) and having an aspect ratio (ratio of major axis X dimension to minor axis Y dimension) sufficient to provide support between the inner core and outer layer of round wires. As a result of the use of such wires, the elliptical cable can be made by using the smallest capacity machine for a given size of cable, thereby optimizing the use of such machinery and minimizing the time spent in stranding.
Abstract:
A steel cord for the reinforcement of rubber articles is disclosed, which comprises a central base structure composed of 1 to 4 steel filaments, and at least one coaxial layer composed of plural steel filaments arranged around the central base structure so as to adjoin them to each other, these steel filaments being twisted in the same direction at the same pitch. In the steel cord of this type, the steel filaments constituting the central base structure have the same diameter (dc), while at least one steel filament of the coaxial layer has a diameter (dso) smaller than the diameter (dc) of the steel filament in the central base structure.
Abstract:
A wire strand for reinforcing elastomers such as tires and conveyor belts comprises multiple individual filaments bundled in a core and an outer layer on a common axis. Each individual filament is tangential to all adjacent surrounding filaments and all filaments have identical lay direction and length in a hexagonally close-packed cross section, which is to say that the strand filaments are of bunched configuration. In accordance with the invention, the outer layer includes filaments of differing diameters so disposed with respect to each other and with respect to the filaments of the core that the outer edges of all filaments in the outer layer, viewed cross sectionally, lie substantially on a common radius from the strand axis.

Abstract:
A steel cord comprises a central bundle of three twisted steel filaments (1) with a diameter d.sub.1 and nine steel filaments twisted around said central bundle with the same twist pitch and twist direction as the central bundle. Three filaments (2) of said nine steel filaments have a diameter d.sub.2 and contact two adjacent steel filaments of the central bundle. Six steel filaments (3) of said nine steel filaments have a diameter d.sub.3 and contact both one steel filament of the central bundle and one steel filament of the three filaments with diameter d.sub.2. The ratio d.sub.2 /d.sub.1 is greater than 1.05 and smaller than 1.16. The raio d.sub.3 /d.sub.1 is greater than-0.205=0.814.times.d.sub.2 /d.sub.1 and smaller than-0.105+0.814=d.sub.2 /d.sub.1.
