Disclosed is a method for the synthesis of sterically hindered polymeric antioxidants based on phenol type antioxidant monomers. The method includes polymerizing and alkylating a phenol containing monomer represented by the following structural formula: to produce a sterically hindered polymeric macromolecular antioxidant. X, R10 and q are as defined herein. The disclosed method is a simple, direct and economical process for the synthesis of sterically hindered polymeric macromolecular antioxidants.

Disclosed are compositions comprising antioxidants and stabilizers, such as, acid scavengers or organic phosphorus stabilizers, and optionally further comprising co-stabilizers. The disclosed compositions are useful as stabilizers for polyolefins and other polymeric materials. The disclosed compositions and methods generally provide longer shelf lifes and better oxidative resistance to materials than currently available antioxidants.

Compounds are synthesized that contain nitrogen and hindered phenol functionalities of an aromatic amine and hindered phenol for use as oxidative stabilizers for organic materials, paints, lubricants, elastomers, and in other applications. The disclosed methods can efficiently synthesize target monomers and polymers without the use of expensive catalysts. Further, the disclosed methods can scale up to industrially useful quantities. In general, the methods provide an improved, highly efficient and economical process for the synthesis of macromonomers having nitrogen containing moiety and sterically hindered phenols and their corresponding polymers.

Methods of preparing an antioxidant polymer are described comprising polymerizing macromonomers that comprise an antioxidant. By having the antioxidant as part of the macromonomer, a polymer with a higher density of antioxidants is prepared more efficiently than coordinating antioxidants to an already formed polymer. The methods of polymerization also encompass copolymerization wherein different macromonomers comprising different antioxidants may be used. Alternatively, the other macromonomer, or monomer, may not include an antioxidant depending on the intended use of the copolymer and desired properties. The macromonomer comprising a antioxidant may comprise more than one antioxidant which may be the same or different. In one embodiment, the macromonomer is benzene or olefin based, wherein the benzene or olefin is substituted with an antioxidant.

A method of preparing an antioxidant polymer includes forming or obtaining a first polymer having reactive pendant groups, where the first polymer does not include cyclic anhydride repeat units, and derivatizing the first polymer with an antioxidant. Another method of preparing an antioxidant polymer includes forming or obtaining a first polymer having reactive pendant groups and derivatizing the first polymer with an antioxidant, where the antioxidant is attached to the first polymer by an acetal, amide, amine, carbamate, carbonate, ester, ether or thioether linkage or by a carbon-carbon bond. The invention is also directed to polymers that are generally prepared by these methods, compositions that include such polymers and methods of using such polymers.
