Non-polymer thickened multigrade engine oils based on synthetic basestocks are provided. The SAE 5W-30, SAE 10W-30 and SAE 15W-40 engine oils are derived from hydrogenated decene-1 oligomer mixtures wherein the oligomers range from C.sub.30 up to C.sub.70+ and are present in specified proportions. Synthetic esters may be combined with the polyalphaolefin oligomer mixture. The synthetic basestocks are formulated with appropriate performance additives to obtain engine oils which meet the desired API Service Requirements for gasoline and/or diesel engine usage. In addition to specified oligomer distributions, the polyalphaolefins have specified viscosities, molecular weights and branching.

Highly useful hydraulic fluids based on synthetic hydrocarbon basestocks and having improved low temperature properties, good shear stability, and capable of substantially meeting the rigid Denison HF-O standards are provided. The products of this invention are comprised of specific proportions of a two centistoke synthetic hydrocarbon oil obtained from the oligomerization of alpha-olefins, particularly 1-decene, specific polymethacrylate viscosity index improvers, and a zinc-based universal/multifunctional additive package. The hydraulic fluids have a maximum viscosity of 1400 centistokes at -40.degree. F. and minimum viscosity of 5.5 centistokes at 210.degree. F.

A method of improving performance of refrigerant systems such as refrigerators and air conditioners that utilize a refrigerant working fluid. The working fluid consists essentially of a heat transfer fluid and a lubricant that is miscible and is otherwise compatible with the heat transfer fluid at all operating temperatures of the refrigerant system. The method is directed particularly to chlorine-free fluoro-group organic fluids and more particularly to hydrofluorocarbon heat transfer fluids. The preferred lubricants comprise polyol ester basestocks and compounded polyol esters that are highly miscible with such hydrofluorocarbon heat transfer fluids.

Useful hydraulic fluids having low temperature properties comparable to MIL-H-5606 fluids but exhibiting markedly superior fire resistance due to their higher flash points are obtained by blending a two centistoke synthetic hydrocarbon oil obtained from the oligomerization of alpha-olefins with a mono- or diester and polymethacrylate viscosity index improver. The fluids of this invention typically have -65.degree. F. viscosities less than 3000 centistokes, 210.degree. F. viscosities of 3.45 or above, and flash points above 320.degree. F. and are readily formulated with conventional additives.

Some of the esters are biodegradable.

Polyester plasticizers having improved low temperature properties are obtained by terminating the polyester with mixed chain-terminating agents. Mixtures of monobasic acids and monofunctional alcohols are employed for this purpose. The polyesters of this invention find particular utility as plasticizers for PVC homopolymers and copolymers.
