摘要: An endoscopic ultrasound-guided system and method for monitoring the location of a device contained within intraluminal and extraluminal regions of a patient is described. The endoscopic ultrasound-guided system includes a linear echoendoscope, a device, and a wire guide. The device and wire guide contain echogenic surfaces which enable transducers placed at the distal end of the linear echoendoscope to ultrasonically monitor the location of the devices. When the echogenic surface of the device encounters incident ultrasound waves emitted from a series of linear array transducers, a real-time ultrasonic image of the device is generated as the incident ultrasound waves reflect off the echogenic surfaces and propagate back towards the transducers. The surgeon receives the real-time ultrasonic image of the device and then can determine the location of the device within the intraluminal or extraluminal region of the patient. After determining the location of the device, the surgeon can adjust the path of the device to ensure it is guided to the target site.

摘要: Methods provide for creating a three-dimensional random fiber orientation in a composite component. According to embodiments described herein, narrow flakes are created from a unidirectional composite fiber tape and poured into a reservoir of a mold, creating a three-dimensional random fiber orientation of the narrow flakes within the reservoir. At least a majority of the narrow flakes have an aspect ratio of length to width of at least 6:1. The narrow flakes are heated and compressed to fill the mold and create the composite component. The three-dimensional random fiber orientation of the narrow flakes within the reservoir is maintained as the narrow flakes are pushed through the mold, creating consistent, uniform strength characteristics throughout the resulting composite component.

摘要: The present invention provides a medical system comprising an elongated medical device having a longitudinal lumen, such as a catheter or a needle, and a stylet configured to be inserted into and subsequently removed from the longitudinal lumen. The stylet is configured to have at least one indicator that indicates that the distal end of the stylet is about to exit the lumen as the stylet is being withdrawn during use. Each indicator alerts the user that the stylet is almost completely withdrawn from the lumen such that the user may take proper precautions and prevent the stylet from inadvertently and uncontrollably exiting the lumen. Each indicator may be located in the proximity of the distal end of the stylet and present either a visual, physical, or audible indication. Additionally, the present invention provides a method that indicates the longitudinal position of a stylet relative to an elongated medical device.
