摘要: A method for treating arteriosclerotic lesions is provided wherein the method is characterized by administering a chemical compound to the patient, the compound being a porphyrin complexed with a radioactive metal. Cells which exhibit an affinity for the porphyrin element indicate sites of plaque buildup. The radioactive metal within the compound is cytotoxic to cells in and surrounding the plaque and may allow tomographic scanning of the plaque as well. The complexed compound can be introduced to the patient a desired number of times to provide the necessary radiation treatment and ongoing monitoring of plaque removal.

摘要: A reduced area imaging device is provided which utilizes selected charge integration periods. Various configurations of the imaging device are provided which locate the elements of the imagine device at desired locations. Regardless of the particular arrangement or configuration of the imaging device, selected charge integration periods are incorporated. The imaging device can be defined as a CMOS-CID device wherein a user may select an appropriate integration period in order to enhance the viewed image to a desired level of brightness. Particularly in fluorescence guided endoscopy and fluorescence assisted surgery, the ability to vary and select particular charge integration periods improves these processes.

摘要: The method of cancer screening allows for a safe, reliable, inexpensive and minimally invasive diagnosis. Cells are first collected through non-invasive or minimally invasive means. The collected cells are stored in a cell culture media to keep them viable. A chemical compound such as 5-ALA is introduced to the cultured cells. The cells are incubated a period of time in order for the interaction to occur between the introduced chemical compound and the collected cells. The cells are then studied under a fluorescence microscope which emits a specific frequency of light which matches the excitation frequency of light which would be required to induce flourescence of abnormal cells. Pre-malignant and malignant cells will fluoresce in response to the interaction with the introduced compound and the specific frequency of light, while normal healthy cells generally will not fluoresce. If necessary, the collected cells may be passed through a flow cytometer to more easily identify the fluorescing cells. A presumptive diagnosis as to cancer may be made based upon the presence or absence of fluorescing cells. If a cell sample is adequately concentrated, a cell sorter does not need to be used and the cell sample may simply viewed under the fluorescence microscope. Specific techniques are disclosed for non-invasive cell collection and minimally invasive collection. Each of these techniques minimize patient trauma and do not call for any type of incision for forced tissue removal as occurs in traditional biopsy procedures.

摘要: A sterile enclosure is provided having a body portion for encapsulating one or more monitor modules used for viewing one or more surgical areas in a sterile operating field. The video monitor can be very thin and lightweight monitor modules. The sterile enclosure may be flexible or rigid and have one or more cable drapes extending from the body to cover one or more cables associated with the video monitor. In some embodiments, the body is flexible. In another embodiment, the body is rigid. The body is transparent in at least an area for viewing the screen of the video monitor and is substantially impervious to liquid and gas. A vacuum line may be connected to the body portion to evacuate air therefrom. The video monitor may be controlled by controls located on the monitor, or may be controlled by voice activation or by a remote video control system. During use, the monitor module may be placed on or adjacent to the patient. Alternatively, a miniaturized sterile monitor module or LCD display unit may be provided which is directly mountable to a surgical instrument such as an endoscope.

摘要: In accordance with this invention, a windowed self-centering drape for a surgical camera is provided. The drape includes a generally cylindrical body portion and a flexible and elastic distal end. The body portion is flexible and substantially non-elastic. The proximal end of the body portion may include either a roll fold or an accordion fold in order to reduce the size of the drape for storage prior to use. An optically clear window is formed integrally with the elastic distal end. The window may be coated with substances which filter out certain wavelengths of light.

摘要: In accordance with this invention a disposable trochar for use as a gas insufflation needle is provided for insertion through the abdominal wall of a patient and into a body cavity. It has an outer sheath with a tubular body, a distal open end and a proximate open end. The distal end may have means which is expandable after the trochar has been inserted into the body cavity to minimize dislocation of the outer sheath during use. A cannula is removably received within in the sheath which has a sharp distal end extendable beyond the distal end of the sheath and an enlarged head at the proximate end of the cannula. The head has a flat land which is engageable with the proximate end of the sheath to limit the extension of the distal end of the cannula beyond the distal end of the sheath. A rod is mounted within the cannula for longitudinal movement between a retracted position and an extended position. A blunt member is provided at the distal end of the rod extending beyond the sharp distal end of the cannula when in extended position. A spring, in a cavity in the head, is attached to the proximate end of the rod urging it toward the extended position. The method of using the trochar is also disclosed.
