A process for controlling a yaw moment in a vehicle by generating a braking force in one of the left and right wheels of the vehicle and by generating a driving force in the other wheel. When a vehicle is accelerated during the turning thereof, grounding loads of rear wheels are increased in order to generate a yaw moment in a direction opposite from a turning direction. However, such yaw moment can be eliminated in order to enhance the turning performance by bringing one of the hydraulic clutches into an engaged state with a torque which is proportional to a product of longitudinal and lateral accelerations. Consequently, a braking force and a driving force in inner and outer wheels during turning of the vehicle, respectively, are generated. When the vehicle is decelerated during turning thereof, grounding loads of front wheels are increased to a yaw moment in the same direction as the turning direction. However, such yaw moment can be eliminated in order to enhance the high-speed stable performance by bringing one of the hydraulic clutches into an engaged state with a torque which is proportional to longitudinal and lateral accelerations. Thus, when the vehicle is accelerated or decelerated during the turning thereof, the generation of an undesired yaw moment can be avoided in order to insure the turning performance and the high-speed stable performance.

A feed-forward control section controls, in a feed-forward manner, left and right hydraulic clutches C.sub.L and C.sub.R of a driving force distributing device by presuming such a driving force distribution amount .DELTA.T that a yaw rate corresponding to a turning state of a vehicle is obtained, based on an engine torque, an engine revolution-number, a vehicle speed, a steering angle and a lateral acceleration. On the other hand, a feedback control section calculates a deviation between a reference yaw rate calculated from the vehicle speed and the lateral acceleration and an actual yaw rate detected by a yaw rate sensor, and corrects the driving force distribution amount .DELTA.T calculating in the driving force distributing device in order to converge the deviation into zero. Therefore, even if the driving force distribution amount becomes excessive due to the feed-forward control to produce an over-steering tendency in the vehicle, this over-steering tendency can be eliminated by the feedback control to stabilize the behavior of the vehicle.

There is disclosed a drive force transmission apparatus which includes a first pressing-force generation unit for generating a pressing force in accordance with a rotational speed difference between driving and driven shafts, and a frictional clutch which is brought into an engaged state by the pressing force generated by the first pressing-force generation unit in order to transmit torque in accordance with the rotational speed difference between the driving and driven shafts. The drive force transmission apparatus further includes a second pressing-force generation unit disposed opposite to the first pressing-force generation unit with respect to the frictional clutch. When needed, the second pressing-force generation, unit is operated to bring the frictional clutch into a firmly engaged state, thereby improving the traveling performance of the vehicle under severe traveling conditions, such as an attempt to extract a wheel trapped in a gutter or the like, traveling on a rough road, traveling on sand, etc.

An on demand vehicle drive system monitors vehicle performance and operating conditions and controls torque delivery to the vehicle wheels. The system includes a plurality of speed and position sensors, a transfer case having primary and secondary output shafts driving primary and secondary axles and a microcontroller. The sensors include a vehicle speed sensor, a pair of primary and secondary drive shaft speed sensors, and brake and driveline status sensors. The transfer case includes a modulating electromagnetic clutch controlled by the microcontroller which is incrementally engaged to transfer torque from the primary output shaft to the secondary output shaft. When the speed of either the front or the rear drive shafts overruns, i.e., exceeds, the speed of the other drive shaft by a predetermined value related to the vehicle speed, indicating that wheel slip is present, clutch current is incrementally increased to increase clutch engagement and torque transfer to the secondary axle. When wheel slip is reduced below the predetermined value the current to the clutch is incrementally reduced. The method of operating such a system is also described.
