The present invention relates generally to gels that flow through an orifice. Specifically the invention relates to gels that are dispensed through a trigger spray nozzle or aerosol spray valve. Still more specifically, the invention relates to nonaquious gels containing polymers whose instantaneous viscosity reversibly decreases when the gel experiences shear loads. The invention includes spray gel compositions, methods of making spray gels and methods of dispensing gels whose viscosity exhibits an instantaneous temporary decrease in viscosity when the gel is subjected to shear force as happens when it flows through an orifice, such as a spray nozzle or aerosol valve.

Specifically the invention relates to gel thickeners that reduce vapor pressure in fuels and solvents and are shear thinning (pseudoplastic or thixotropic) or are shear thickening and remain pourable and flowable. Still more specifically, the invention relates to nonaqueous gels made with diblock copolymers that reduce the Reid Vapor Pressure of gelled gasoline and lower the total volatility of gelled hydrocarbon solvents. These gels may contain secondary amino acid or triblock polymer gelling agents. The invention includes gel compositions and methods of making gels.

Two-phase gel compositions are provided. The two-phase gel compositions are obtained by mixing a gelled ester composition comprising a mixture of an ester compound and a polymer compound selected from the group consisting of triblock copolymers, star polymers, radial polymers, multi-block copolymers, and a combination thereof and a hydrophobic, non polar solvent. The gelled ester composition has a viscosity η1 and the solvent has a viscosity η2. The two-phase gel composition is substantially free of phosphate compounds and has a viscosity η which is greater than or equal to η1 and which is greater than or equal to η2. The two-phase gel compositions are also obtained by mixing a gelled ether composition, a gelled alcohol composition, a gelled naturally-occurring fat and oil composition or a combination thereof with a hydrophobic, non polar solvent. The two-phase gel compositions may be used to suspend various solids, liquids and/or gases.

Gelled ester compositions are provided. The gelled esters are obtained by mixing a suitable ester with one or more triblock copolymers, star polymers, radial polymers, multi-block copolymers, or mixtures thereof. Optionally, one or more diblock copolymers can be used in forming the gel compositions. In addition to gelled esters, gelled alcohols, gelled ethers, and gelled naturally-occurring fats and oils also are obtained by using one or more diblock copolymers, triblock copolymers, star polymers, radial polymers, multi-block copolymers, or mixtures thereof as a gelling agent. Butyl rubbers and alkyl galactomannan also can be used as a gelling agent. The gel compositions may be used to suspend various solids and/or liquids.
