The present invention is in the preparation of methacrylic or acryloxyalkylalkoxysilanes by the reaction at a temperature of from 80.degree. and 130.degree. C. of an alkali (meth) acrylate with a halogen alkylalkoxysilane in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt which has long-chin alkyl moieties, in which the sum of all carbon atoms is between 10 and 40 as a phase-transfer catalyst. In the new procedure no solvents need to be used. The yields are better than 95%.

Disclosed are new copolymers which are useful as adhesion mediating agents. The copolymers of the invention are prepared by the copolymerization of vinyl silanes, vinyl esters of alpha-halogen fatty acids and fatty acid vinyl esters, which are then reacted with tertiary amines. The new polymers are soluble in water and in such solutions they can be used as adhesion mediating agents between silicatic and other materials and polymers.

Disclosed is a casting resin of reduced viscosity based on methacrylic acid esters with a high content of aluminum hydroxide as filler containing a mixture of at least one organosilicon compound with a functional group, at least one silicic acid ester, and at least one organic metallic acid compound of metals of Groups IVB and/or VB of the Periodic Table of the Elements. The functional group of the organosilicon compound is ethylenically unsaturated and bound to the silicon atom either directly or by alkylene groups. The casting resins of the invention have improved working qualities. Plastic objects and moldings manufactured from these resins have decidedly improved use properties.

A copolymer having the recurrent unit of the general formula: ##STR2## wherein R" represents OH and/or [O].sup.- [NH.sub.4 ].sup.+ and/or [0].sup.- [Me].sup.+ where Me is an alkali or alkaline earth metal and Z can represent a moiety of the formula: ##STR3## wherein R'" represents an alkyl moiety. Disclosed is a casting resin based on acrylic acid esters having a high content of finely dispersed fillers and containing a mixture of organosilicon compounds having functional groups and metallic acid esters of metals of Groups IVB and VB of the Periodic Table of the Elements. The functional group of the organosilicon compound is ethylenically unsaturated and bound to the silicon atom either directly or through alkylene groups. The addition of this mixture to the casing resins produces a desirable reduction of the viscosity of these resins, which are used, for example, for the manufacture of sanitary articles.The filler content is at least 20% and can be as high as 95% with the proviso that when the filler content is in excess of 80 wt. -%, the filler contains 10 to 30 wt. -%, based on the total weight of filler, of fines having a particle size less than 0.1 mm and the remainder of the filler being coarse up to 4 mm.

The mixtures can contain additional means for influencing the gelling and the gel strength. The present invention relates to new organosilane esters which can be characterized by the formula Y-(CH.sub.2).sub.n Si(CH.sub.3).sub.p -X.sub.m Z.sub.3-(m+p). In this formula, Y represents either a substituted or unsubstituted amino group, or it represents the mercapto moiety or the moiety ##STR1## X represents an alkoxy group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and Z a glycol ether moiety. The index n can assume the numerical values from 1 to 3, m can be 0 or 1 and p can be 0 or 1 or 2, on the condition that m+p is equal to or less than 2. The new silanes yield very stable hydrolyzates and have good adhesion-improving properties. They are therefore particularly well suited for use in sealing compositions.

The present invention is in the modification of starch by silanes and is performed by bringing the starch into intimate contact with the hydrolyzates of the silanes in the presence of alkali aluminates or alkali hydroxides. Preferably this is done in the aqueous solution of the silane hydrolyzate, in which case the additives can be used either in aqueous solution or in solid form. The aluminate or alkali hydroxide is present at least in such an amount that 0.4 mol of aluminate will be present for each mole of silane. The modification is possible not only with alkyl alkoxysilanes, but also with organofunctional alkoxysilanes. The starch modified with the silanes has better practical properties than corresponding unmodified starch and can be used, for example, for the hydrophobation and oleophobation of cellulosic material.

A method for the modification of starch by silanes wherein the starch and silane are contacted in an organic solvent in the presence of a metallic acid ester of a metal of groups IVB or VB of the Periodic Table of the elements. The resulting suspension is stirred. The subsequently separated starch exhibits better working characteristics than the corresponding unmodified starch.
