Disclosed are processes for the production of fluorinated olefins, preferably adapted to commercialization of CF3CF═CH2 (1234yf). Three steps may be used in preferred embodiments in which a feedstock such as CCl2═CClCH2Cl (which may be purchased or synthesized from 1,2,3-trichloropropane) is fluorinated (preferably with HF in gas-phase in the presence of a catalyst) to synthesize a compound such as CF3CCl═CH2, preferably in a 80-96% selectivity. The CF3CCl═CH2 is preferably converted to CF3CFClCH3 (244-isomer) using a SbCl5 as the catalyst which is then transformed selectively to 1234yf, preferably in a gas-phase catalytic reaction using activated carbon as the catalyst. For the first step, a mixture of Cr2O3 and FeCl3/C is preferably used as the catalyst to achieve high selectivity to CF3CCl═CH2 (96%). In the second step, SbCl5/C is preferably used as the selective catalyst for transforming 1233xf to 244-isomer, CF3CFClCH3. The intermediates are preferably isolated and purified by distillation and used in the next step without further purification, preferably to a purity level of greater than about 95%.

The invention relates to azeotropic and azeotrope-like mixtures of 1,1,1,3,3-pentachloropropane (HCC-240fa) and carbon tetrachloride and a process for separating the azeotrope-like mixtures. The compositions of the invention are useful as an intermediate in the production of HFC-245fa. The latter is useful as a nontoxic, zero ozone depleting fluorocarbon useful as a solvent, blowing agent, refrigerant, cleaning agent and aerosol propellant.

The present invention provides a process for the preparation of trifluoromethyl iodide. The process includes the step of: contacting in a reactor a compound represented by the formula: CF3—W and a compound represented by the formula: Z-I wherein W is selected from CF3, hydrogen and bromine; Z is selected from hydrogen, iodine and chlorine. The step of contacting is carried out, optionally in the presence of a catalyst and further optionally in the presence of air, at a temperature, pressure and for a length of time sufficient to produce the trifluoromethyl iodide.

The invention provides a process for the manufacture of fluoropropanes, and more particularly, the manufacture of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropane (HFC-236fa) and 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane (HFC-227ea). The process utilizes 3-carbon by-products, i.e. waste material, from other commercial processes as raw material. The process also avoids the use of hexafluoropropane (HFP) as a reactant for making HFC-227ea, and is able to convert any three-carbon hydrocarbon (HC), hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC), chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) compound or any halogenated propanes and produce high valued three-carbon hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) at significantly lower cost than current commercial processes.
