The present disclosure is directed to a traceless directing group in a radical cascade. The chemo- and regioselectivity of the initial attack in skipped oligoalkynes is controlled by a propargyl alkoxy moiety. Radical translocations lead to the boomerang return of radical center to the site of initial attack where it assists to the elimination of the directing functionality via β-scission in the last step of the cascade. In some aspects, the reaction of the present invention is catalyzed by a stannane moiety, which allows further via facile reactions with electrophiles as well as Stille and Suzuki cross-coupling reactions. This selective radical transformation opens a new approach for the controlled transformation of skipped oligoalkynes into polycyclic ribbons of tunable dimensions.

The present invention relates to compounds containing at least one C—C triple bond of the formula I R1-[A1-Z1]m-A2A3-[Z2-A4]n-[Z3-A5]o-R2 I, which have neutral dielectric anisotropy, to the use thereof for high-frequency components, to liquid-crystalline media comprising the compounds, and to high-frequency components, in particular antennae, especially for the giga- and terahertz region, comprising these media. The liquid-crystalline media serve, for example, for the phase shifting of microwaves for tuneable phased-array antennae.

A method of making α,ω-diiodoperfluoroalkanes includes combining: diatomic iodine, at least one perfluoroalkylene oxide represented by the formula wherein Rf represents a perfluoroalkyl group; and at least one of: a) a first metallic compound comprising nickel, and a second metallic compound comprising molybdenum that is compositionally different from the first metallic compound; or b) a metallic alloy comprising from 50 to 70 percent by weight of nickel and from 20 to 40 percent by weight of molybdenum, based on the total weight of the metallic alloy, thereby producing at least one product represented by the formula I(CF2)nI, wherein n independently represents an integer in the range of from 1 to 11. The total weight of the at least one product wherein n is 3 or greater exceeds the total weight of the at least one product wherein n is 1 or 2 by a factor of at least 4.

A method of forming chloro-substituted silanes from the reaction of an alkoxysilane with a chlorinating agent in the optional presence of a catalyst is provided. More specifically, chloro-substituted silanes, including but not limited to silicon tetrachloride, are formed by reacting a chlorinating agent, such as thionyl chloride, with an alkylalkoxysilane having the formula (R′O)4-xSiRx, where R and R′ are independently selected alkyl groups comprising one or more carbon atoms and x is 0, 1, 2, or 3. The catalyst may be dimethylformamide, (chloromethylene)dimethyliminium chloride, or triethylamine, among others. The chloro-substituted silane formed in the reaction along with several by-products has the formula (R′O)4-x-ySiRxCly; where x is 0, 1, 2, or 3 and y is 1, 2, 3, or 4. One of the by-products of the reaction is an alkyl chloride.
