    Abstract: A method of making α,ω-diiodoperfluoroalkanes includes combining: diatomic iodine, at least one perfluoroalkylene oxide represented by the formula wherein Rf represents a perfluoroalkyl group; and at least one of: a) a first metallic compound comprising nickel, and a second metallic compound comprising molybdenum that is compositionally different from the first metallic compound; or b) a metallic alloy comprising from 50 to 70 percent by weight of nickel and from 20 to 40 percent by weight of molybdenum, based on the total weight of the metallic alloy, thereby producing at least one product represented by the formula I(CF2)nI, wherein n independently represents an integer in the range of from 1 to 11. The total weight of the at least one product wherein n is 3 or greater exceeds the total weight of the at least one product wherein n is 1 or 2 by a factor of at least 4.

    Abstract: A process for preparing metal alkoxides starting with a metal chloride and esters of either succinic acid or glutaric acid to produce metal alkoxide, an acid anhydride and alkyl chloride. Esterification of the acid anhydride with alcohol regenerates the ester of organic acid. The first step is carried out under anhydrous conditions. By regenerating the organic acid esters in the process, the only byproduct is an alkyl chloride.

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for making CF3CF2CH3, CF3CF═CH2 and/or CF3CCl═CH2. The process involves reacting at least one starting material selected from the group consisting of halopropanes of the formula CX3CHClCH2X, halopropenes of the formula CClX2CCl═CH2 and halopropenes of the formula CX2═CClCH2X, wherein each X is independently F or Cl, with HF in a reaction zone to produce a product mixture comprising HF, HCl, CF3CF2CH3, CF3CF═CH2 and CF3CCl═CH2; and recovering the CF3CF2CH3, CF3CF═CH2 and/or CF3CCl═CH2 from the product mixture. Also disclosed is a process for making CF3CH2CHF2, CF3CH═CHF and/or CF3CH═CHCl. This process involves reacting at least one starting material selected from the group consisting of halopropanes of the formula CX3CHClCH2X, halopropenes of the formula CX3CCl═CH2 and halopropenes of the formula CX2═CClCH2X, wherein each X is independently F or Cl, with HF in a reaction zone to produce a product mixture comprising HF, HCl, CF3CH2CHF2, CF3CH═CHF and CF3CH═CHCl; and recovering the CF3CH2CHF2, CF3CH═CHF and/or CF3CH═CHCl from the product mixture. Also disclosed is a process for making CF3CF2CH3 and/or CF3CF═CH2. This process involves reacting at least one starting material selected from the group consisting of halopropanes of the formula CX3CHClCH2X, halopropenes of the formula CX3CCl═CH2 and halopropenes of the formula CX2═CClCH2X, wherein each X is independently F or Cl, with HF in a reaction zone to produce a product mixture comprising HF, HCl, CF3CF2CH3 and CF3CF═CH2; and recovering the CF3CF2CH3 and/or CF3CF═CH2 from the product mixture. In each of the processes the molar ratio of HF to total amount of starting material fed to the reaction zone is at least stoichiometric. Also disclosed is an azeotropic composition comprising CF3CCl═CH2, and HF. Also disclosed is an azeotropic composition comprising CF3CF2CH3, and HF.

    Abstract: A process is disclosed for making CF3CF═CHF. The process involves reacting CF3CClFCCl2F with H2 in a reaction zone in the presence of a catalyst to produce a product mixture comprising CF3CF═CHF. The catalyst has a catalytically effective amount of palladium supported on a support selected from the group consisting of alumina, fluorided alumina, aluminum fluoride and mixtures thereof and the mole ratio of H2 to CF3CClFCCl2F fed to the reaction zone is between about 1:1 and about 5:1.Also disclosed are azeotropic compositions of CF3CClFCCl2F and HF and azeotropic composition of CF3CHFCH2F and HF.

    Abstract: Described herein is a process for the manufacture of hydrofluoroalkanols of the structure RfCFClCHROH, comprising reacting a halofluorocarbon of the structure RfCFX2, wherein each X is independently selected from Cl, Br, and I, with an aldehyde and a reactive metal in a reaction solvent to generate a reaction product comprising a metal hydrofluoroalkoxide, neutralizing said metal hydrofluoroalkoxide to produce a hydrofluoroalkanol, and recovering the hydrofluoroalkanol. Also described herein are methods of manufacturing hydrofluoroalkenes of the structure RfCF═CHR from halofluorocarbons of the structure RfCFX2, wherein each X is independently selected from Cl, Br, and I, comprising (1) reacting halofluorocarbons of the structure RfCFX2, wherein each X is independently selected from Cl, Br, and I, with an aldehyde and a reactive metal to generate a reaction product comprising a metal hydrofluoroalkoxide, and reductively dehydroxyhalogenating said metal hydrofluoroalkoxide to produce a hydrofluoroalkene or (2) reacting a hydrofluoroalkanol of the structure RfCFXCHROH or a hydrofluoroalkoxide of the structure RfCFXCHROMX, wherein M is a reactive metal in the +2 oxidation state, with a carboxylic acid anhydride and a reactive metal in a reaction solvent to form a hydrofluoroalkene and isolating the hydrofluoroalkene. In particular, 2,3,3,3,-tetrafluoro-1-propene may be manufactured with this process. Also described are compounds of the formula RfCFClCHROC(═O)R′.

    Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the synthesis of 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene which comprises, in one embodiment, reacting a compound of CF3X1 with a compound of CX2H═CHX3, wherein X1, X2, and X3 are each independently selected from the group consisting of fluorine, chlorine, bromine and iodine, to produce a reaction product comprising a compound of CF3CH═CHX3, wherein X3 is as described above; and when X3 is not fluorine, fluorinating the compound to produce 1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene. The process in another embodiment comprises preparing tetrafluoropropene comprising thermally cracking one or more compounds capable of producing a reaction mixture which preferably comprises diflurocarbene radicals and vinylidene fluoride, and converting said reaction mixture into—tetrafluoropropene (1,3,3,3-tetrafluoropropene).
