Several synthetic additives have been used to improve the carbon coatings on LiFePO4 electrode materials. Pyromellitic acid (PA) added prior to calcination decreases the D/G ratios of the carbon produced in situ, while the use of both iron nitrate and PA results in increased sp2 character. Thus, the carbon coatings are structured with a greater fraction of graphitic character. The production of structured carbon coatings results in higher pressed pellet conductivities of LiFePO4/C composites and improved electrochemical performance of cells containing these cathode materials, although the carbon content is not necessarily increased. The combination of both ferrocene and PA used during LiFePO4 synthesis causes more carbon to be retained, although the structural characteristics are similar to that produced from the same amount of PA alone.

The undercarriage includes first, second and third components and the first component includes structure for semi-permanent mounting of the first component from the head generally centrally intermediate the opposite ends thereof, but spaced longitudinally along the head from its point of longitudinal center of gravity. The first component includes lower right and left mount portions and the second and third components comprise right and left axle assemblies each including a mounting end and a wheel journaling end. The right and left mount portions and the mounting ends of the right and left axle assemblies include coacting structure for releasably supporting the right and left axle assembly mounting ends from the right and left mount portions, respectively. The wheel journaling ends of the axle assemblies are horizontally disposed, extend in parallel opposite directions and have support wheels journaled thereon. A removable tongue assembly is also provided for use in conjunction with the wheeled undercarriage and includes structure for removable attachment to one end of the associated elongated head.
