The engine block is cooled by a flow of the coolant and an engine head is cooled by a flow of water from the body of water. Other heat emitting devices are connected in thermal and fluid communication with the water and coolant conduits.

In a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine, the cylinders are disposed in two rows, the cylinders in one row being staggered with respect to the cylinders in the other row and the longitudinal axes of the cylinders in the first row being disposed at an angle to the longitudinal axes of the cylinders in the other row. The outlet valves are located close to the plane of symmetry between the rows of cylinders whereas the inlet valves are located out of this plane. This avoids the potentially disadvantageous circumstance of directing cold water directly from a body of water through the cooling jacket of the turbocharger. A crankshaft is provided with a plurality of counterweights which are asymmetrically formed so that one surface has a shape which induces a flow of air and oil mist in a preselected and preferred direction. This shape also improves the aerodynamic characteristic of the counterweight and reduces the friction that the counterweight would otherwise experience as it rotates about the rotational axis of the crankshaft. A tapered surface is provided on a lower surface of each crankshaft and the tapered surface is positioned at a leading edge of each counterweight.

The engine includes a cylinder head having an upper peripheral edge and a valve cover having an assembled width and a lower peripheral edge substantially corresponding in shape to the upper peripheral edge of the cylinder head. The valve cover includes first and second portions coupled together along an engagement surface that does not extend across the entire assembled width of the valve cover. The second portion is separable from the first portion along the engagement surface to facilitate removal of the first portion from the engine. In one aspect of the invention, the first and second portions are separate castings.
