In an illumination device, a light guide is adapted to emit the light from a face thereof and is provided with an area, on a face opposite to the light emitting face, for diffusing and/or reflecting the light introduced into the light guide from an end face thereof or is provided with uneven light emitting characteristics along the longitudinal direction of the light guide, and the center of the light source positioned at the end of the light guide is placed at a position aberrated from the normal line to the area, whereby attained are compactness, a low cost, a low electric power consumption, a high efficiency of utilization of the light emitted by the light source, and excellent and uniform illumination characteristics. An image reading device and an information processing apparatus can also be equipped with the above-mentioned illumination device.

In order to satisfy all requirements for an apparatus, namely performance associated with high resolution and moving images, wide sensor effective area, and reductions in the size and cost of the apparatus, the apparatus includes a plurality of photoelectric conversion devices respectively having photoelectric conversion areas, and a light guide plate for guiding incident light to each photoelectric conversion device. Transmitting portions for driving the photoelectric conversion devices or/and connecting portions for connecting the photoelectric conversion devices so as to transmit electrical signals between the photoelectric conversion devices are formed on the light guide plate.

A flow battery comprises a plurality of unit cells each constituted of stacked unit cells each consisting of a prescribed number of stacked diaphragms and positive electrode chambers and negative electrode chambers separated by the diaphragms, a positive electrode fluid tank associated with each unit cell to have its outlet connected with an inlet of the positive electrode chamber of the unit cell and its inlet connected with an outlet of the positive chamber of a immediately preceding unit cell, a negative electrode fluid tank associated with each unit cell to have it outlet connected with an inlet of the negative chamber of the unit cell and its inlet connected with outlet of the negative chamber of an immediately preceding unit cell, a pump for supplying positive electrode fluid from the positive electrode fluid tanks to the positive electrode chambers, a pump for supplying negative electrode fluid from the negative electrode fluid tanks to the negative electrode chambers, and means for electrically connecting the plurality of unit cells in series. The flow battery of this configuration achieves improved charge/discharge coulomb efficiency and voltage efficiency, without reducing pump efficiency, and, by increasing the length, and thus the resistance, of the leakage current path reduces the amount of leakage current.
