Abstract:
A method of making one or more alcohols with a single hydroxy group, such as methanol and ethanol, the method comprising contacting a polyol and water with a basic catalyst. The polyol may be glycerol, for example. The catalyst may be magnesium oxide.
Abstract:
A network management system is provided for managing a computer network. The management system is configured to represent the computer network as having one of a plurality of defined network states. Once the state of the network has been identified, the management system can assist the user in making modifications to the computer network and in making recommendations to the user for possible modifications to the computer network. These modifications can include, for example, configuring network devices, removing network devices, replacing network devices, and adding new network devices.
Abstract:
The present invention pertains to compounds of the following formula (wherein RP, r, q, RN, Ralk, and Q are as defined herein) and compositions comprising those compounds. The compounds may be used to inhibit osteoclast survival, formation, and/or activity; to inhibit conditions mediated by osteoclasts and/or characterised by bone resorption; in the treatment of bone disorders such as osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer associated bone disease, Paget's disease; and/or in the treatment of conditions associated with inflammation or activation of the immune system.
Abstract:
An emergency breathing apparatus for skiers which is a device for attachment to an item of clothing, or in a ski pole or walking pole, which is adapted to enable a user to breathe in the event of being trapped in an avalanche. The emergency breathing apparatus comprises a conduit and a mouthpiece construction comprising a body member and a mouthpiece member. The mouthpiece member is in fluid communication with the conduit and is moveable between a compressed position at or near the body member and an extended position where it is located away from the body member, and allows a user to exhale through the conduit.

Abstract:
An apparatus 10 for consuming coal in powering a gas turbine engine 12 is disclosed. The apparatus includes an auxiliary combustor 16 and a partial gasifier 18. The gasifier 18 produces combustible char and combustible fluids. The combustible fluids are burned in the gas turbine engine. The combustible char is burned in the auxiliary combustor to form high temperature gases. Heat is transferred from the high temperature gases to the working medium flow path of the gas turbine engine. The exhaust from the gas turbine engine provides combustion air to the fluidized bed combustor.
Abstract:
A catalyst is provided, the catalyst comprising rods having mean length of 100 microns or less, the rods comprising a metal molybdate or tungstate, the metal being selected from the group consisting of iron, manganese, nickel, chromium, vanadium, aluminum, silver, titanium, copper, bismuth, and cobalt. A method of making such a catalyst is also provided.

Abstract:
A cleaning implement assembly, includes a handle and insert having cleaning elements. The insert has an insert receiving recess adapted to slidably receive an interchangeable insert. The assembly has a locking element adapted to enable the insert to be removably held in the insert receiving recess. The locking element includes a snap fitting type tab in a recess arrangement.
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods of diagnosis of certain disease states, such as osteoporosis, that are associated with polymorphisms in an IL-6 gene, comprising determining the genotype of an IL-6 gene. The invention is also directed to methods of identifying an individual predisposed or susceptible to certain disease states, such as osteoporosis, associated with polymorphisms of an IL-6 gene, comprising determining the genotype of an IL-6 gene in the affected individual. The invention is further directed to compositions useful for determining the genotype of an IL-6 gene, to kits and diagnostic apparatuses comprising such compositions, and to methods of treatment of diseases associated with IL-6 genetic polymorphisms.
