    摘要： A decoder checks a table within its received input signal and tunes to at least one of the listed frequencies to determine its associated service group within a subscriber television system. The associated service group associates the decoder with the modulators, transport streams, and other components providing services and programming to that particular decoder. The decoder transmits its associated service group to the subscriber television system headend. The subscriber television system then knows the services and programming available on that particular decoder. The decoder can periodically verify its associated service group and, if the service group is changed, notify the headend. By establishing decoders for auditing the system, the definition of the service groups can be established or updated when components or configurations are introduced or changed.

    摘要： A digital video, audio and data distribution system which enables a set-top terminal (STT) associated with a customer's television set or other information presentation device to request interactive digital video, audio and data services from a service provider (SP) through the use of control system messages transmitted via a hi-directional signalling path. The requested interactive service is transmitted from the service provider over a portion of the bandwidth of a broadband transmission network which is dedicated to interactive digital services. A Video Session Connection (VSC) is provided for setting up and maintaining interactive sessions between the set-top terminal and a video service provider during the time the interactive programming is provided to the customer. The set-top terminal and service provider establish the Video Session Connection via a two-way signalling path within the bandwidth of the transmission medium into the customer's home. Applications of the system of the invention include "movie on demand" services where the set-top terminal not only requests a movie to be transmitted from the service provider for immediate transmission, but also the bi-directional command channel permits the set-top terminal to control the video presentation by sending commands such as Play, Pause, Fast-Forward and the like to the Service Provider while the movie is being transmitted. Other applications of the invention include on-line data retrieval services, shop at home services and other services which require the use of an interactive connection.

    摘要： A system and method are provided for providing a full service cable television system. The cable system incorporates a digital and analog transmission architecture capable of delivering a high number of high quality television programs, advanced cable services, and online services to a subscriber's home. The cable system comprises a cable headend, at least one fiber transport, at least one distribution hub, at least one hybrid fiber coax plant, and a plurality of set-top terminals. Programs and services are transmitted to the set-top terminals in both digital and analog formats to maintain downward compatibility with existing systems. The set-top terminal incorporates a central processing unit, a unified memory architecture, a memory management unit, communications circuitry, I/O control circuitry, and audio and video output circuitry. Through these components the set-top terminal provides advanced cable services such as a comprehensive channel navigator, an interactive program guide, Impulse Pay-Per-View activation, Near-Video-On-Demand and Video-On-Demand programming, and advanced configuration controls. The set-top terminal also provides online services such as World Wide Web browsing, Internet E-Mail, and Home Shopping.

    摘要： The present invention comprises customizable, multimedia messaging over a subscriber television system, such as a cable or satellite system, utilizing a service independent framework. The present invention comprises a multimedia messaging (MMM) server generally located at a headend of a cable or satellite system, and an MMM client at a communications terminal located remotely with respect to the MMM server. A service provider or operator defines a message configuration that is utilized to present the message content to one or more subscribers. The message configuration includes parameters that control the presentation of the message content. The MMM server receives an MMM request from a service application, and in response thereto, generates an MMM request which is sent to the communications terminal, and more particularly, to the MMM client. The MMM client processes the MMM request, including the retrieval of any message content or the message configuration. The MMM client then presents the message to the subscriber. Since the MMM server and MMM client are platform independent, any number of different services may send uniquely generated and uniquely designed messages for presentation to a subscriber(s).

    摘要： Customizable, multimedia messaging over a subscriber television system utilizing a service independent framework is provided.
