摘要: Provided, among other things, is a method of cutting and folding a planar substrate with a focused laser beam, directed from above the substrate, to form a shape with features in 3-dimensions, the method comprising: (a) executing from above laser cuts to the planar substrate so as to provide one or more a releasable segments; (b) executing from above one or more laser-executed upward folds to bend all or a portion of a releasable segment; and (c) executing from above one or more laser-executed downward folds to bend all or a portion of a releasable segment; wherein the cuts and folds are structured so that precursors to the 3D shape remain attached to the substrate while sufficient cuts and folds are made to form the 3D shape, and wherein the planar substrate is immobile during said steps (a) through (c), or is only moved in the plane of the substrate.

摘要: A system for controlled motion of circuit components to create reconfigurable circuits comprising: a support; a substrate operatively associated with the support; actuators operatively associated with the support configured to physically move circuit components and to move the circuit components into physical and electrical contact with the substrate; the substrate comprising at least one conductive segment arranged to electrically connect circuit components when electrical contacts of circuit components are placed in contact with at least one conductive segment; and control circuitry configured to control the first and second actuators to thereby position the circuit components relative to the substrate; whereby circuit function is determined by the selection of circuit components and the location and orientation of circuit components relative to the substrate and conductive segments to create a reconfigurable circuit.

摘要: Conventional gas turbine engines are generally optimized to operate at nearly a fixed speed with fixed blade geometries for the design operating condition. When the operating condition of the engine changes, the flow incidence angles may not be optimum with the blade geometries resulting in reduced off-design performance. By contrast, according to embodiments of the present invention, articulating the pitch angle of turbine blades in coordination with adjustable nozzle vanes improves performance by maintaining flow incidence angles within the optimum range at all operating conditions of a gas turbine engine. Maintaining flow incidence angles within the optimum range can prevent the likelihood of flow separation in the blade passage and also reduce the thermal stresses developed due to aerothermal loads for variable speed gas turbine applications.

摘要: A photo detection device comprising a contact layer through which light enters; an absorbing region positioned such that light admitted through the contact layer passes into the absorbing region; at least one diffractive element operatively associated with the absorbing region operating to diffract light into the absorbing region; the configuration of the at least one diffractive element being determined by computer simulation to determine an optimal diffractive element (or elements) and absorbing region configuration for optimal quantum efficiency for at least one predetermined wavelength detection range, the at least one diffractive element operating to diffract light entering through the contact layer such that phases of diffracted waves from locations within the photo detection device or waves reflected by sidewalls and waves reflected by the at least one diffractive element form a constructive interference pattern inside the absorbing region. A method of designing a photodetector comprises using a computer simulation to determine an optimal configuration for at least one wavelength range occurring when waves reflected by the diffractive element form a constructive interference pattern inside the absorbing region.
