Abstract: A multi-opening oven assembly for simultaneously heating a plurality of blanks, for example aluminum blanks, before forming the heated blanks in a production line is provided. The oven assembly includes vertically aligned shelves to present a plurality of chambers for heating the blanks. A table including an entry side platform and an exit side platform moves vertically along the oven assembly. A rail system extends along the platforms and the shelves to convey the blanks in and out of the chambers. Once one set of heated blanks is removed from a first chamber, the table moves vertically to a second chamber and is ready to receive the next set of heated blanks. A continuous supply of heated blanks is provided for high throughput. The oven assembly is preferably disposed in a press adjacent a forming station of an existing production line and thus, no additional floor space is required.

Abstract: A door assembly for a vehicle is provided. The door assembly includes an inner panel and an outer panel which are joined together to define a central space therebetween. The central space has a front which faces towards the front of a vehicle and a back which faces towards a back of the vehicle. Both the inner and outer panels are made of aluminum, and at least one reinforcement beam made of steel is disposed in the central space between the aluminum inner and outer panels to provide the door assembly with increased impact resistance.

Abstract: A lightweight battery housing for an automobile and method of assembling same. The lightweight battery housing comprises an upper cover, a tub, and a protection frame whereon the upper cover and lower tub sit. The upper cover and tub may comprise at least one of a steel material, an aluminum material, and/or a fiber-reinforced composite. The protection frame comprises at least one of steel material and aluminum material. The tub includes pockets for holding battery modules and seals against the cover to provide a leak-resistant battery holder. Fasteners connect the tub, cover, and protection frame and a seal is placed between the tub and the cover. The cover and other components of the battery housing may be integrated directly into a body-in-white of the vehicle.

Abstract: A vehicle bumper assembly includes a bumper beam and a crash box. At least one of the bumper beam or the crash box is cast from metal, such as aluminum or magnesium, to reduce weight, reduce manufacturing process steps, and improve performance characteristics of the bumper assembly. In an embodiment, both of the bumper beam and the crash box are cast from metal to establish an integral connection therebetween. One of the bumper beam or the crash box can be open along a top and bottom portion of the bumper assembly and include at least one reinforcing rib cast integral therewith. Abstract: An automated inspection system comprises a camera configured to capture an image of a subject item, and a processor in communication with the camera and programmed to recognize the subject item in the image. The processor is configured to determine, from the image, the presence, location, or other properties of a feature of the subject item. The processor may present an augmented reality display as an overlay onto a live image of the subject item. The system may include a portable computing device including the camera and a display screen presenting the augmented reality display with one or more overlays onto a live image of the subject item. The overlays may include icons indicating a feature being recognized as being present and non-defective, or an error icon indicating a missing or defective feature. The portable computing device may include an internal illuminator and/or an external illuminator.

Abstract: An integrated battery cooling system includes a battery enclosure and a plate attached directly to the battery enclosure. The battery enclosure or the plate includes a wave-like cross-section that combines with the other to define coolant channels therebetween. The battery enclosure may have the wave-like structure and a flat cover plate may be attached to the top of the wave-like structure. A lower plate may include the wave-like structure and may be attached to the bottom of the battery enclosure. Coolant may pass through the coolant channels defined between the battery enclosure and the plate to draw heat away from battery cells housed within the battery enclosure.

Abstract: A system for integrating a body-in-white (BIW) frame structure with a battery enclosure includes a BIW frame having a structural reinforcement member disposed around bottom portion. The battery assembly is disposed laterally inward from the structural reinforcement and is integrated with the BIW frame. The battery enclosure does not include lateral structural reinforcement, because lateral protection is provided by the BIW frame. The upper cover of the battery enclosure also serves as the floor of the BIW frame structure. The upper cover may be installed along with the rest of the BIW frame, with battery cells and a bottom tray of the battery being installed later, or the battery may be assembled as a module, with the battery being installed into an open space within the BIW frame thereby providing the floor.

Abstract: A body-in-white (BIW) of an electric vehicle includes an integrated battery frame having an integrated cover and a lower tray that may be joined together for holding a battery pack for powering the EV. The integrated battery frame extends between and connects to each of two opposite rocker panels of the BIW and provides a floor of the vehicle for mounting cabin components/assemblies such as passenger seats. The integrated battery frame also functions to enclose a battery compartment for protecting batteries from water intrusion and crash events. The integrated battery frame and BIW of the present disclosure provides an efficient EV architecture that eliminates redundant structures and components, improves load paths, and increases space for batteries.
