Abstract:
Active carbon filters and systems that are operative to detect active carbon filter degradations are provided. The active carbon filter can include a carbon filter comprising activated carbon and defining a filter surface; a first piezoelectric wafer active sensor on the filter surface that is electrically isolated from the carbon filter; and a second piezoelectric wafer active sensor on the filter surface that is electrically connected to the filter surface; and an impedance monitoring device electrically connected to the first piezoelectric wafer active sensor and the second piezoelectric wafer active sensor. Methods are also disclosed for determining if any degradation has occurred in an active carbon filter.
Abstract:
Var optimization (VARO) is a subsystem of a voltage and var optimization (VVO) system that processes a capacitor switching optimization problem. The VARO is a self contained process that may work stand alone or in conjunction with a Voltage Regulation Optimization (VRO) system to provide integrated VVO solutions. The VARO system takes network inputs and calculates optimal settings for distribution network capacitor banks.

Abstract:
A fuel injector that provides fuel targeting and fuel spray distribution with non-angled metering orifices at higher than normal fuel flow rates is described. In a preferred embodiment, the fuel injector includes a housing, an inlet, an outlet, a seat, a metering disc, and a closure member. The seat is disposed proximate to the outlet and includes a sealing surface and a seat orifice extending through the seat from the sealing surface along the longitudinal axis to a tapered surface that extends obliquely from the seat orifice about the longitudinal axis to define a first volume. The metering disc includes a first surface disposed about the longitudinal axis and having a portion contiguous to a plane and a second surface that extends from the first surface away from the inlet and bounds a portion of the plane to define a second volume. The plurality of metering orifices is located outside a projection of the seat orifice that defines a first virtual circle on the second surface. A method of flowing fuel through the fuel injector is also described.
Abstract:
A carrier injection sensorless (CIS) starting control system that is capable of determining the angular position and velocity of a rotor for a wound field synchronous machine at or near rest and comprises north-south pole determination and a variable or dual frequency carrier signal for improved performance throughout the start sequence for the machine.
Abstract:
The present invention provides novel solid phase carriers coated with a quaternary ammonium organosilane coating for use in reducing or eliminating the viable number of microorganisms in a liquid. The invention is useful in a wide variety applications, such as water purification and reduction of harmful microorganisms in liquid foodstuffs.
Abstract:
A teleconference system including a plurality of personal presence cells positioned at a local communication site and at a remote communication site. The plurality of personal presence cells are characterized as either sensor cells or display cells. The sensor cells include at least one video camera positioned to sense and transmit an image of the local participant, and an image screen positioned to reflect an image of the local participant toward the at least one video camera and for viewing of an image through the screen. The display cells each include at least one projection display positioned to display a multi-dimensional image of a remote participant on a display screen. A transmission link interfaces the plurality of personal presence cells positioned at the local communication site and the plurality of presence cells positioned at the remote communication site.
Abstract:
A method for discovering and assigning telephone numbers that have commercial, trademark or vanity significance to requesting subscribers on a worldwide scale. The method includes determining numbers that have value because they potentially will be requested for commercial, trademark or vanity purposes by companies or persons active in various locations in the world. Language translations and transliterations are also taken into account in order to obtain a telephone number that will retain its commercial, trademark or vanity value in an area that speaks a different language.
Abstract:
An in-circuit emulation capability mode incorporated in an integrated circuit. The in-circuit emulation capability mode disables the microcontroller of the integrated circuit and allows use of an external in-circuit emulator device to test and debug the integrated circuit without the necessity of physically replacing the microcontroller with in-circuit emulator hardware. The in-circuit emulation capability mode is suitable for any integrated circuit, however, it has been found that integrated circuits incorporating an in-circuit emulation capability mode are especially suitable for incorporation into the base and handset units of a cordless telephone that integrates the speech, control channels, and microcontroller portions of a modem, and the man-machine interface functions of a cordless telephone.
Abstract:
An off-grid electrical system has at least one power source selected from the group consisting of photovoltaic cells, wind turbines, or fluid turbines. At least one generator electrically connected to the at least one power source, wherein the at least one power source converts one or more environmental factors into energy processed by the at least one generator. A plurality of battery banks, wherein at least one battery bank is storing energy from the at least one generator, while a second battery bank is discharging energy. A micro controller controlling the charging and discharging of the plurality of battery banks, wherein the micro controller simultaneously transfers operations of the plurality of battery banks between charging and discharging.
