A ventable container for materials to be heated (preferably digested) by microwave radiation includes a movable rupture diaphragm in a venting passageway in a closure or cover for such container. Such diaphragm is tightenable into place so that the container is sealed and in such sealed state is protected by the rupture diaphragm against pressures that could develop in the container that are higher than that for which it was designed. An important feature of the invention is that the rupture diaphragm is controllably movable, when desired, to open positions to vent the container during heating and afterward, and is resealable after such venting. Because of the chemical reactivity of the reagents utilized in digestions an inner chemically resistant liner is desirably employed in conjunction with a physically stronger outer body, with the outer body giving the liner enough strength to withstand pressures developed during the heating. Also within the invention are processes for heating and digesting materials in the described containers with microwave radiation, microwave heating apparatuses including the invented containers, and lined containers wherein the liners are of improved sealing structures so that the containers are more tightly sealed when heated.

A microwave heating system which is especially useful for rapidly, uniformly and positively sterlizing biological media, such as broths and gels used as incubation or growth media for bacteria, includes a source of microwave radiation, a microwave chamber, a container or a plurality of containers in the chamber, and a mixer for mixing the contents of the container or containers during heating. The mixer is at least partially external to the container and is capable of operating when the container is positively sealed to prevent contamination of the contents, and the mixer is preferably a combination of an external magnet and a mixing element which is at least in part of magnetic material and is moved by changes in the magnetic field set up by the magnet, as the container and contained mixing element are moved with respect to the magnet, as on an oscillating turntable. Other systems for mixing the material in the container are also within the invention, although they are not as satisfactory as that previously described, and such other systems include mechanical systems, such as solenoid activated cores or extensions thereof for pushing vertically against a turntable and thereby moving it out of its normal horizontal plane, cams for accomplishing the same purpose, devices for causing the containers to swing, in pendulum-like motion, as they are rotated, and ultrasonic devices. The apparatus may be used for various other heating operations and even for mixings, without heatings.

An apparatus for controllably heating material directly and indirectly by microwave radiation comprises a chamber in which the material to be heated (often to dryness, as for analysis) is placed, a source of microwave radiation for radiating into materials in such chamber for controllably heating such a material, and a support for such material, which support comprises a matrix of microwave radiation-transmissive material and a particulate microwave absorptive material dispersed in such matric material, which microwave absorptive material has a Curie temperature, above which it becomes microwave transmissive, so as thereby to prevent excessive heating of the support and the material thereon which is to be controllably heated, and which matrix material is stable and form-retaining at the Curie temperature of the dispersed material. Preferably the support will be of a silicone rubber or a polyfluoroalkylene polymer matrix, such as polytetrafluoroethylene, and the dispersed material therein will be a ferrite, garnet or mixture thereof. The apparatus may include a turntable for carrying a plurality of supports or it may include an automatic electronic balance, in both of which embodiments of the invention computerized controls and/or readout means may be present. Also within the invention are the described support, and processes for effecting such heating and/or drying, in one of which processes a particulate diluent or dispersant for the sample being treated is employed to prevent overheating thereof.

A method and associated instrument are disclosed for increasing the sequential rate at which a series of microwave assisted chemical reactions that potentially generate high pressure can be carried out. The method includes the steps of opening a pressure-resistant valve on a microwave-transparent pressure-resistant vessel to define a unpressurized pathway through the valve into the vessel, inserting a tube through the pathway in the valve and into the vessel, transferring at least one composition into the vessel through the tube, removing the tube from the vessel and from the pathway in the valve, closing the valve to seal the vessel against pressure release, and exposing the vessel and its contents to microwave radiation. The instrument includes a source of microwave radiation, a cavity in microwave communication with the source, an attenuator that forms at least a portion of the cavity, a pressure-resistant microwave-transparent reaction vessel having portions in the cavity and portions in the attenuator, a pressure-resistant valve on the mouth of the vessel, a reciprocating tube for passing through the valve and into the vessel when the valve is open, and means for mechanically inserting and retracting the tube through the valve and into the vessel when the vessel is in the cavity and the attenuator.

Sealable container assemblies include containers for materials which are to be microwave heated, such as in digesting or extracting operations, made of thermoplastic material, such as fluoropolymer, that is strengthened by reinforcing means that may be a fiber reinforced thermoplastic of high tensile strength, such as polyetherimide, with reinforcing continuous fibers in a matrix of such thermoplastic, which fibers are very preferably in the shape of a sleeve or sleeves and are of glass or other heat resistant and microwave transmissive material. The containers may be strengthened by incorporating the fiber reinforced thermoplastic in a wall or walls of the container or preferably by inserting the container into a reinforcement, which is a sleeve or collar of the reinforced thermoplastic. In both such constructions the reinforcing means protects the container against radial failure due to pressure that is generated by the microwave heating of the container contents. However, it has been found that in those cases wherein the internal pressure of the container rises even higher than that against which the reinforcement is protective, failure of the side wall and the reinforcement may be explosive, so the containers of this invention are of a structure that causes them to fail at an unreinforced location before the reinforcement, which failure is less explosive and less damaging to equipment employed and to any surroundings. Also described are the container construction, which preferably includes a central bottom depression and a skirt, and procedures for utilizing the containers in heatings of materials.

An apparatus for use in analyzing materials for ash content includes a walled chamber which retains microwave radiation therein, a source of microwave radiation, such as a magnetron, for radiating onto contents of such chamber, and an ashing furnace in the chamber which includes a heat resistant wall of low thermal conductivity, which is transmissive of microwave radiation, and a microwave absorptive material which is capable of being heated by microwave radiation to an ashing temperature. The furnace includes a passageway through it for the entry into the furnace cavity of a gas, such as air, and for venting gas, such as combustion products, from the furnace cavity, and preferably also includes a removable trapezoidally shaped door in a front wall thereof, which, when the chamber door is open, is readily removable from the furnace by hand, without burning the operator's fingers, despite the high internal temperature in the furnace cavity. Air flows through the chamber and around the furnace, helping to cool the exterior, of the furnace walls. It is preferred that the operation of the furnace and the ashing temperature be controlled by a combination of a temperature sensor, preferably a thermocouple, and a control mechanism, which turns the magnetron on and off as the temperature in the furnace cavity falls below or rises above a desired set temperature, respectively.

This valve is particularly suited as a relief valve in a microwave system-based, closed vessel digestion procedure. This valve includes a pressure-deformable, resilient wall member having a fluid vent port, and an obstructing member that cooperates with the wall member to open and close the valve. An apparatus for ashing materials which comprises a chamber, a source of microwave radiation for direction onto contents of the chamber, and in the chamber a support, such as a fused quartz pad or crucible, for the material to be ashed, and an ashing means of a stable microwave absorptive material, capable of being heated to high temperature by microwave radiation, such as a flat block of silicon carbide or a plurality of such blocks with openings therein to accommodate the crucible. The ashing means is in contact with the support for the material to be ashed and is capable of heating such support and such material to an ashing temperature. When a fused quartz fiber pad, preferably of the non-woven cloth type, is employed on top of and in contact with the ashing means of microwave absorptive material, as a support for the material to be ashed, it is preferred to cover such material with another such pad, which inhibits loss of the ash due to its being carried out of the chamber, as by an exhaust fan, while yet permitting the release of gases generated during the ashing process. Also disclosed are processes for ashing materials and for analyzing such materials for ash content, which processes may be practiced with the aid of the described apparatus.
