An electrohydraulic system includes a plurality of electrohydraulic devices individually controlled by on-board microprocessor-based control electronics. Each individual device controller is connected to and addressable by a master controller for coordinating operation of the various devices. An electrohydraulic servo valve assembly includes a hydraulic manifold having a valve spool variably positionable therein under control of a torque motor. A microprocessor-based controller is connected to the torque motor and is mounted on the manifold by a cover which encloses and protects both the controller and the torque motor. A watchdog timer in the microprocessor-based controller monitors pulsewidth modulated signals to the torque motor for terminating operation in the event of signal loss. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the servo valve assembly is coupled to a linear actuator which has its position monitored by an electroacoustic transducer. Improved electronics couple the transducer to the control microprocessor.

An electrohydraulic servo system in which a microprocessor-based controller directs a pulse width modulated control signal to a servo valve for controlling flow of hydraulic fluid therethrough. Duration of each half-cycle in the pulse width modulated control signal is separately controlled by selectively incrementing or decrementing duration of the half-cycle in increments of the microprocessor clock period. Signal transition is controlled by a timer interrupt in which time required to enter the interrupt routine is measured following generation of the interrupt, and further operation is delayed by a complementary time, so that control signal transition takes place a fixed preselected number of clock periods after generation of a timer interrupt. In this way, timer interrupt latency is eliminated, and resolution of the pulse width modulated signal is enhanced through individual duration control of the signal half-cycles while maintaining a fixed modulated signal period.

A high flow rate electromagnetic fuel injector valve with a rapid response time is disclosed for utilization in electronic fuel injection systems. The fuel injector valve comprises a stator means and a valve assembly having a self-centering valve member reciprocally mounted in a valve housing. The valve member consists of a ball valve with a semispherical sealing surface connected by a stem to a magnetically attractable cup-shaped armature. The armature is preferably coated with a friction reducing material where it slideably contacts an armature guide bore of the injector valve during its reciprocation. The ball valve of the valve member obturates an exit orifice of the valve housing by sealing against a conical valve seat which has been coined to receive it. Adjacent to the ball valve and conical valve seat interface are vortex generating and metering orifices for the tangential entry of fuel into a swirl chamber of the valve housing. The positioning of the metering orifices, which are precisely sized by ballizing to control flow rate, is used to regulate the injector spray angle generated by the vortex of fuel entering the swirl chamber. The conical surface of the valve seat produces vortex amplification to further increase the swirl effect caused by the positioning of the entry orifices.

Centrally bored end caps are fixed at the front and rear ends of a tubular injector body and a coil wound on a bobbin is disposed inside the body chamber between the end caps. The front end cap receives within its bore a valve assembly including a valve housing and a needle valve with attached armature reciprocally movable against a valve seat to obturate a metering orifice in the valve housing. The valve housing contains fuel inlets for the pressurized entry of fuel into the injector and the needle valve is ported to provide fluid communication to the armature to relieve pressure build-up. The rear end cap mounts within its bore a core member acting as a stator which extends through a central bobbin bore to form a controllable air gap adjacent the armature: the core member further contains internally an adjustment screw and ball member. The ball member and adjustment screw cooperate with a recessed closure spring positioned substantially within the armature to controllably bias the needle valve against the valve seat. Because of its recessed position, the force of the closure spring is applied substantially along the central axis of the injector valve and the ball member prevents torsional windup forces from being generated by the spring. O-ring seals for the bobbin bore are provided in compression between recesses in the bobbin and the slower contracting material of the front end cap and core member to produce extended cold temperature operation.

An interbody device that restores the disc space height between two vertebrae during spinal fusion surgery. The device includes a center plate surrounded by a perimeter portion that combine to have a relatively flat configuration in one dimension and relatively wide configuration in a perpendicular dimension. After the disc space has been cleared, the device is inserted into the disc space in a direction so that the wide dimension of the device is substantially parallel to the body of the vertebrae. The device is then rotated so that the wide dimension of the device becomes perpendicular to the vertebral body so as to cause the disc space height to be restored. Bone graft material is then introduced through a fill tube coupled to the device so that the bone graft material is distributed on both sides of the center plate and into the disc space.
