The present invention involves a system for altering the aerodynamic shape and/or fluid flow about a solid body. The preferred embodiment comprises an obstruction disposed on the solid body and extending outwardly from the solid body into the fluid flowing over the solid body and a synthetic jet actuator embedded in the solid body such that said fluid flowing over the solid body encounters the obstruction before the synthetic jet actuator. The synthetic jet actuator includes a jet housing defined by walls, the jet housing having an internal chamber with a volume of fluid and an opening in the jet housing connecting the chamber to an external environment having the fluid, and a volume changing means for periodically changing the volume within the internal chamber so that a series of fluid vortices are generated and projected in the external environment out from the opening of the jet housing. A synthetic jet stream is formed by the fluid vortices entraining the fluid of the external environment and is projected outwardly from the solid body. The fluid flowing over the solid body contacts the synthetic jet stream forming a recirculation region, thereby modifying both the flow field and the pressure distribution and similarly modifying both the lift and drag characteristics of the solid body.

One aspect of the apparatus disclosed herein is a system for modifying an aerodynamic property of an aerodynamic surface in a fluid flow. The fluid flow could comprise a free stream fluid flow, or an internal fluid flow, such as in a nozzle, diffuser, or compressor. The system of the preferred embodiment comprises a synthetic jet actuator embedded in an aerodynamic surface. In one aspect, the aerodynamic surface may be a wing. The synthetic jet actuator typically has a jet housing defining a chamber, where the chamber is in fluid communication with the fluid. This fluid communication may be accomplished via an orifice in a wall of the housing. Additionally, a portion of said housing is preferably moveable such that the volume of the chamber can be adjusted. The system also comprises a device for changing the position of the moveable portion of the housing at a predefined frequency. In this way, the synthetic jet actuator is pulse modulated in order to enhance the synthetic jet actuator's performance. In another aspect, the invention may be seen as a method of controlling a synthetic jet actuator. The method preferably comprises the steps of driving a synthetic jet actuator at a first frequency and turning the synthetic jet actuator on and off at a second frequency. The synthetic jet actuator interacting with a fluid flow to alter the fluid flow field.

A keyless locking mechanism is activated by a remote unit which transmits coded signals to an electromechanical door lock device. The electromechanical device components are configured for secure mounting within the void or hollow portions of existing door locking apparatus. A sensor in the outer doorknob receives and forwards the coded signals to a processor which compares them with a predetermined stored signal. If an acceptable comparison is made, the processor generates control signals for the device, which acts solely along the locking axis to enable or disable the door locking assembly. The coded signals include two separate signals which are transmitted in segments interleaved with one another. The first signal includes an entrance code, while the second signal provides information concerning the frequency over which the next segments will be transmitted. The processor uses the second signal information to tune the receiver.

An exemplary incubator comprises an optically accessible enclosure having a plurality of fluidic ports. A heating element is disposed within the enclosure that is coupled to an external heater controller. An autoclavable microfluidic perfusion chamber is disposed within the enclosure that comprises a cell culture life support chamber, an inlet port disposed in the perfusion chamber, a collection chamber in communication with the culture chamber, an outlet port coupled to the collection pool, and a perfusing substrate. An optically transparent, gas permeable membrane is attachable to the top of the perfusion chamber. The incubators have optical accessibility, forced flow fluidic control, temperature control, are portable and modular, and are inexpensively manufactured. The incubators permit in-the-field drug testing and culturing of biological tissues.
